How to use Hill Hold Control

Featured Replies

When I ordered my Yeti I asked for two extras, Off Road Button and Hill Hold Control. Hopefully we are a few months from needing either, I only got them for added safety in the winter not for genuine off road use, but the Hill Hold Control confuses me a little. When I need the Off Road settings I can clearly see that there is a button to press.

How does the Hill Hold kick in though? There is no button to press, is that how it is? How does the Yeti know that I am about to go down a steep and icy slope and I need the help of the Hill Hold Control? Does it hear the fear in my voice and know that it is required? I have tried looking for the answer but have not got a really simple, easy to understand one so would appreciate some help.

I thought hill hold was usually for pulling away on hills.. when you come off the brake it holds them on for a second or so whilst you take up the clutch?

Hi,

the HHC is part of the braking system not traction system. Operates via the foot brake; when you come to a stop on a slope of more than three degrees by depressing the foot brake the brakes will remain on after you release the foot-brake for 2 seconds. This allows you to move your foot to the accelerator and balance the clutch without having to resort to the handbrake.

Works well but you do need a few more revs on a steeper hill to overcome the initial hold of the brakes, otherwise you might stall

Yeah, as above, it's not like a defenders low ratio.

So it just does it automatically? There is not a magic button that is missing off my car?

No there is no missing button, it is part of the ESP system and like posters above said, it will hold the pressure in the front brakes for about 2 seconds when you release the brake pedal when wanting to pull away facing up hill, you will feel the brakes releasing as you try to pull away. Will only work when car is on slope and not on the level. My Octavia has it and it works fine, even when I use left foot braking.

No button used just the foot brake.

If you had a Tiguan then yes there is a button to turn the system on or off but it has the more advanced system which keeps the brakes on indefinitely until you move away even on level ground. Drawback is you have to have an electronic handbrake as well.

You stop on a hill facing up and want to move off.

Foot on clutch, select moving off gear.

Firm push on the footbrake and release the handbrake.

Remove foot from foot brake (car remains stationary), apply pressure to accelerator and get clutch bite.

Move off

No button to press.

Oh thanks Ray you reminded me works if your reversing uphill as well.

TP

It also works if reversing up hill

Not only have I learnt that there is no button but I always thought this was for going down hills not up them. I have re-read the brochure and see that I was thinking of Downhill Assist. For that I do get to press a magic button, I add fear to my voice and then it knows to go slowly down my icy hill.

Thanks for the replies.

From hair raising experience you will need a good pair of winter boots; don't rely on the standard factory fit rubber

Hill Hold = going up hill (mostly) from a standstill

Down Hill Assist = going down slowly.

Downhill Assist works when the "Off-Road" button is engaged and the green light shows. It works on a steep and slippery hill by controlling the brakes to maintain grip (if possible). The engine can be engaged or in neutral (I keep mine engaged) and the speed is controlled by the accelerator (not the brake).

The Downhill Assist is engaged, when on the hill, by a dab on the brake pedal. The green light will flash.

From my experience of icy hills last winter, it works and works well. BUT it is very dependent on the tyres so if you live in an area where the weather conditions can be severe then fit winter boots.( See The Plumber's posts on this subject)

Both Up-Hill and Downhill Assist require a bit of practice to get used to their operation.
