05 1.9TDI burning Oil

Featured Replies

Hi -

Since my last service about 1.5 months ago I have had to top up the oil. I have been driving the 1.9 TDI hard enough but nothing outrageous. The oil I used to top up is Q8 5W-40. No oil spils on the driveway so car must be burning it. Man I've only done about 2000 KM since the service and it has taken 800ml of a top up.

Any ideas bit worried now.

OK. First thing to check is that you are using the correct oil. I assume your engine is a PD.

IIRC, the only suitable oil that Q8 sells is Formula V Long Life 5W-30. If this is not the one you are using, then you risk damaging your engine.

Having said that, I am sure that Skoda will tell you that 1l/2500km is acceptable.

Hi rwbaldwin -

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I saw that on the web yesterday went I weent searching for suitable oils. It afairly complicated world i.e. choising the correct oil! Anyhow I saw that Q8 5w-30 oil as well is the only one which meets with teh VW 506.01 standard. I've been topping up with 5W-40...hymm. Actually I just noticed now as well that the stamp on the front of the car recommends using shell oil.

I have noticed alright that anytime when the car is hot if I pull the dip stick out I see smoke coming from the dip stick shaft. Never noticed this before in other cars but then again I haven't had oil burn problems before either. This could explain the loss of oil if the oil is too light and is being burnt?

BTW what does PD mean?

octojoe.

Thanks Billy -

After searching the web apparently the PD system was invented by VW as they didn't want to pay Fiat for the CDI royalties!

Hymm so what I have concluded is that I need to get my oil changed asap and I am going to fill it with shell oil ( as recommended by the sticker on my engine) which is compiant with the VW 506.01 spec.

Cricky what happened to going down to your local garage and taking any old oil....life is gone way too complicated :-(

Thanks,

octojoe.
