Engine Oil Problem - High Consumption...!

Featured Replies

Hello all....!

I own a Skoda Octavia Mk1 (IU) since December 2009. It is a 1.6 liter - 8 valve - 75 kW Petrol engine. I bought the car at a mileage of 60,400 km.

In April 2010, the engine oil level was low and refueled the oil to the necessary limit with a long life (5W-30 type) and consumption of oil was normal till 67,700 km. As part of my summer holiday to Italy and France i have changed the engine oil with 4.3 liter 5W-30 expensive oil and started my journey. To my surprise the oil lamp glowed thrice in the 3000 km trip and i have to refuel it with 3 liter 5W-30 oil.

Details:

60,400 to 67,700 = unknown oil + refueled 1liter 5W-30 oil

67,700 to 70,700 = 4.3 liter 5W-30 + 3 liter 5W-30 oil

The main problem: i don't know the type of oil (5W-30 or 5W-40 etc) already in the car when i purchased, i tried to check the previous owner receipts but it just mentioned engine oil.

My question are:

1. High consumption of engine oil due to type (5w-30) of oil change or 3000 km trip ?

2. Is there any problem in the engine?

3. I have asked one of my friend he suggested me to check with 5W-40 type of oil.

Is there any one, who experienced similar problems or seen this query before....please let me know what to do now.....?

Any help is appreciated....Thanks in advance.

Skoda reckon anything up to 1 litre in 1000km is acceptable, so I don't know whether Skoda would even say anything is wrong! I have heard that using long-life oil when an engine doesn't need it can cause problems, but I think this to do with oil not circulating properly due to the channels getting blocked, rather than oil actually being lost.
