rear seat tv screens?

Featured Replies

Offspring #1 is now 3 yrs old and refuses to sleep on longer car trips. Ideal solution would be some sort of tv screen so he can watch a film to keep him busy.

Looking at these:

Anyone got any experience?

Ideally i'd like something "built in" rather than clipped on, but I'm thinking that might be a bit pricey? Anyone got any experience or a recommended vendor?

TIA.

Rob.

I have been thinking about the whole headrest replacement although have not looked into the compatibility at this stage. There are a few good options out there to keep the little ones quiet on the big trips.

How about playing "I Spy", singing songs, car cricket or just talking to him on car journeys? Kids get far too much TV time and there is so much to see out of the windows on journeys. Try to engage him and spark his imagination with what is in the environment around as you travel along. Far better for his development and much easier on your wallet! :)

I use a Sony portable DVD player. This straps easily to the back of the headrest and is easy to remove to take with us. It has a 5 hour battery life so can charge it in the car and use it out of the car as well i.e. resturaunt when waiting for food to arrive. Talking too them/playing games etc. is all well an good but if they are hungry etc. then this does not always work.

I like that better! stays in the car but zipped up out of sight... nice solution.

Golf-Fiend - thanks for the parenting tips. Do you think you could play I-spy for 3 hours straight with a 3yr old? We already do a bunch of stuff - this is just as an extra option, and most likely to be used when offspring #2 (11 months old) is asleep.

A word of warning here!

I got a pair of Xtron 9 inch screen headrests from eBay for around £170 and although they work OK, they were not very comfortable for front seat occupants, as you can't adjust the angle.

Also, as I did, (but too late before I spent the money) - you have to consider that a headrest is a safety feature of the car and designed to prevent whiplash if you get rear ended.

I am not very confident that most of these cheapo replacements incorporating DVD screens would be very effective - one of my Xtrons units mounting post pulled out, so would have offered no safety restraint.

I have now removed them and had a Rosen 8 inch screen roof mount DVD player fitted - much better quality, but obviously involves some headliner modification, so will need to stay in the car on disposal.

Rob, sorry, I didn't mean to sound condescending. I too have two kids (6 & 4) and I know what it is like to keep them entertained in a car for long journeys. Been to NW Scotland a few times (650 miles from us!).

The worst was when we went camping in Devon for week and my Stream HU was being repaired - the family was tortured by my singing all week. They were soooo very happy when the unit was refitted.

This is tricky I bought a couple that are held on with straps, PITA, 2 year old ripped one off the seat and broke the clips, now have to replace both, make sure there is velcro or something similar, I dont like the idea of changing my safety headrests either. If you have two there are also at least three cables to contend with.

Get an ipad and brodit clip, someone on here did this and it looks great.

gilesk = thats exactly why i would prefer something built-in. I don't want trailing wires or something that's going to get knocked off or broken.

JT: good point ref the safety and comfort..

I think its worth a punt on the amazon units at 200 quid:

.. includes the wireless headphones etc. If its not going to fit very well I could always look at some OE headrests modified to take the screen.. something like this maybe..?

Yeah that seems like a nice cheap solution! :)

We had the same problem, luckily I have a PSP, so I bought a car holder for that for a bargain tenner, acquired a bucketful of kids cartoons and bunged em on, was a lifesaver for our recent journey up to Scotland.

As said though, and as I'm sure you'd agree, we did use it in moderation. Didn't just subject the poor fella to 4hrs of Waybuloo and Spongebob without a break.

Also, can alter the brightness of the screen so it's not too bright at night.

I would but the thought of my little darling being in kicking distance of it and the expense make me think about something cheaper.
