Tyres for Superb 2

Featured Replies

I see a lot of discussion about tyres for the Superb 2 on this forum.

Everyone rubbishes the standard Conti Sport Contact 2, standard fitment. because they are expensive and wear fast and recommends Hankook or Vredestein tyres.

Has any one seen the Tyre Test 2010 in the Autoexpress issue 1,131 for 8-14 September. They tested 225/40R18 tyres on a pair of Skoda Octavias, similar cars in suspension setup to the Superb,

Some of the cheaper tyres they tested were frightening in the wet, but neither the Hankook Ventus S1 evo or the Vredestein Ultrac Cento came out particularly well in the wet. Whereas the Conti Sport Contact 3 that the tested (an improvement on the 2) came out as the best all round tyre. I have to say though, I have yet to match the stated prices in the test report.

It seems to me that you get what you pay for with tyres as with most things.

As a motorcyclist I appreciate the value of sacrificing longetivity for grip. The Conti2's on my Superb are wearing fast but they have been excellent for grip wet or dry. I usually swear by Vredestein tyres (I have a full set of the Ultrac Cento's waiting to be fitted to my wife's Octy) but the tyres I will consider come judgement day will be either the Conti 3 or the Ultrac cessanta which seems to be grippy and long lasting.

My son has 18" caeesantas on his "tweaked" golf and they are showing very little wear after 10k miles and he swears by them.

I think a sport based tyre for a car like the Superb 2 is a waste of time, whilst i would never fit budget tyres to my Superb its not a performance car and would never be able to exploit all of the grip available from a performance based tyre it simply isnt designed that way.

We went for Eagle F1 as they are a good all round tyre , the best in the wet (imo) and especially when grip is reduced, i felt the wear from the original Contis was diabolical and the road noise was excessive, the Eagles are much quieter

Eagles on my Octy VRS have worn well and that is able to get a lot more out of the tyre since the PD engine is more powerful and the suspension more sports orientated

Well guys, my Passat B6 is on one Conti and three Michelin's, one is a Premacy and the other two are Pilot's, I've done 8k on them now, and they weren't new when I bought the car, my driving is 90% urban with plenty of U-Turn and roundabout action, so far they are all standing up really well, I know a Mich is about as much money as a tyre could possibly be, but they are as always, tyres that return the miles.

I replaced my original contis 4-6 weeks ago (all 4) and was sooo disappointed.

Poor in wet or in bad weather earlier in year.

Driving on the whit line was like driving on ice.

Traction on take off was awaful. Wheels would spin without much effort.

Front 2 were gone and back 2 nearly after 13k miles.

Thats awful.

Local guy said GT radial 18" would be best value/performance/grip.

I find them alot better than the contis in all ways (a liitle more feedback from the road than contis).

Dont know about the wear but it cant be any worse than the 13k on the contis.

4 for €500 fitted instead of over €800 for contis.

Just changed the front contis on my Superb2 at 25k miles, rears are still on and going strong with plenty of wear left. I changed to a budget brand as I am in the throws of sorting out a property closer to work, so currently running 'Event' tyres on the front.
