Help needed -9mm gasket problem EML light on

Featured Replies

Just fitted 9mm gasket yesterday and the car feels a lot smoother -far better to drive :-)

However, after covering just short of 100 miles, the engine management light has come on! If I drill-out the gasket to 12-14mm, will the EML go off on its own, or do I need to get a dealer to sort it for me? Do you think they would be upset that I've changed the gasket?!

Any help greatly appreciated

I'd check you've put everything back exactly right first...

ISTR that the EML can come on with the smaller holed gasket. I'd get the EML checked, could just be a coincidence. If the code is EGR related, I seem to recall drilling to 11mm is one solution.

I don't think I'd drill to 14mm as I think that's the size fitted as standard. May as well put the original back if you are going to do that.

Thanks to ap0gee & vindaloo for your replies!

The gasket that I removed was 25mm (just measured it to check) so I'm thinking drilling out the 9mm to anywhere up to 14.5mm (as per guide at fabia-vrs.com) should help?!

I checked under the bonnet & everything is back exactly as I found it; bolts holding gasket in place are nice & tight too.

The plot thickens. . . When I drove the car tonight, the EML was on initially, but then went off as I drove, eventually coming back on some 15 minutes later. Does this mean that the EML will turn itself off when the problem is resolved?!

Anyone with any experience of this that can offer an insight?

Thanks again,

My EML came on when the gasket hole was 9mm. I drilled it out to 10.5mm (I think), cleared the light and its never been on since. Probably 3 years ago now.

The light will go out after a number of restarts, but will obviously come back on again at some point if you leave the gasket at 9mm, the fault code will remain stored until you clear it with VCDS or similar.

Had the exact same problem when I fitted the 9mm gasket to my vrs, the EML would come on randomly then go off for a few days then back on again !

I drilled mine out to 12mm and the EML hasn't come on since :D EML went off on it's own so no need to go to dealers :)

Thanks to everyone for the info.

Well, I've drilled it out to 12mm tonight. Taken it for a spin, and the engine actually feels smoother than before ?!!

EML still on though, so will have to see how it goes over next day or two. Will let you know. . .

it only operates till turbo comes on boost...

Well, the light went off and hasn't come back on again. . . Yet!

Mine hasn't come back on since drilling it to 12mm so I imagine yours won't come back on either
