HELP! Yellow engine oil level warning light on...

Featured Replies

Right here goes the story... Around 1 month ago the Yellow warning light came on...checked the oil it was low so topped it up and engine running fine. Waited for the service at a new 'recommended' local mechanic. Got the car back it was running far better than it ever has...spark plugs etc. done. Was advised that sensor needs to be replaced.;

Took it to my freind a mechanic in Rochdale today...had the window regulator and motor replace - Driver side window now working! Sensor fitted and oil replaced...the yell;ow warning light stayed on!!! Advised to take it for a spin...did so brought it back...warning light stayed on. Got some diagnostic equipment plugged in could not work out the problem or clear the warning light!

He said would have another look at it next week and should be okay until then... was quite late and close to shutting.

Can anyone give any suggestions?

hi

You could try disconnecting the battery for five minutes this might clear the fault code, make sure you have the radio code for your car first.bill

Thanks for the advice...I will look into that. Would it mess anything else up?

More than likely a faulty bonnet switch as its that signal that resets the light.

Its fitted in the catch, you can follow the wiring along to the plug and disconnect it, bridge the terminals out and this will reset the light.

Sorry can you explai what bridging out is?

Join the two wires together to complete the circuit, with a paperclip for example, doesnt need to stay there.

Assuming the switch is broken or adrift.

I don't know if I am missing the point, (not sure about the 4x4) but I thought the yellow oil light was for pressure not level !

So if I am correct may be its down on oil pressure and you need to check the oil pump !!

The Manual mentions "Engine oil level too low"? Can anyone shed some light on this...when the light came on originally it was due to the oil level being low so I topped it up and the light did not go off?

Red lights are warnings, stop car

Yellow lights are cautions, get it looked at.

Red oil light is pressure warning, yellow light is level.

If the oil level gets low the yellow warning light comes on. The dash cluster then looks for a open shut signal from the bonnet catch to say that you have opened the bonnet and topped the oil up and shut the bonnet. It then rechecks the level from the sensor which should now be ok. If the switch isnt working, then it wont know the bonnet has been opened and thus wont turn the light off.

Phew thanks for that...I will fiddle with it asap...blinking I paid for a new ruddy sensor for nothing?!!!!

Yep, sometimes us folks in the 'stealers' do actually know a thing or two.

Thanks maybe I will just PM you...only from time to time of course!

You can of course if they are on but a post will help others if they have the same issue and use the search function.

No doubt I will do posts instead and thank you.

Went to see my friend today (mechanic) found out the bonnet switch was faulty due to the wire breaking. After some wire connector and a cable tie the liht is off. They stated that Ig I did not tell them where to look they would not have had a clue!

Tech1e you are the master!

No problems :)
