side-view mirror shakes and rattles

Featured Replies

Has anyone ever had a problem with their side-view mirrors? I recently noticed that my driver's side, s.view mirror was shaking so much while driving that I could barely use it to see what was behind me. Was more than abnormal. I grabbed the glass and tried to sort of wiggle it a bit to see if sth seemed obviously loose inside, but nothing was. Then, when I shut the door, I could hear a something like loose springs vibrating. The only word I can think of to decribe is perhaps "boing...". Then, as I was cleaning the glass part of the mirror, the glass fell off. As you may know, the glass is glued on. So, I intend to find some type of adhesive and reattach it this weekend. Still, the question is: what could it be inside the casing that is loose and rattling and perhaps caused the glass to come off? I should point out that I think I was playing with the glass with too much force while trying to see what was causing the rattle sound and the shaking, and this may have been the main reason it fell off, though it could certainly be a combination of both.

So, does anyone out there have any experience with a s.view mirror replacement or any experience at all that could help me figure out what the problem could be? I've never diassembled a mirror. I assume I will have to remove the door panel first and will read up on that before I try, but what could this problem be? As always and like most car owners I know, we want to solve the problem properly but to not have to spend a silly amount on things like this. ;-)

I had this with a SEAT ibiza. It was how the mirror has attached (glued) to the bracket that slots into the mirror housing. SEAT swapped it out. The mirror and the plastic housing attached just pulled out from the wing mirror and the new one pushed in. Less than 2 mins to swap.

Funny my passenger side one did this a few weeks ago,i just put some super glue around the back and held it on until it set, seems fine so far for what was a but of a bodge, lol
