Buying a Superb...

Featured Replies

Well, I've been considering a new motor for around 6 months now and although I drive a Saab 93 TiD at present, which within reason is a very nice car, I had vowed not to have another as the quality of the interior just isn't good enough for the money.

I stumbled across a good review for the Mazda 6, which took my fancy, although the styling was a bit "loud" for me... then I read the long term test of the Superb in What Diesel magazine... a quick search on the internet made me realise that perhaps the Skoda was the right car for me.

I've taken a test drive of an SE 170 bhp Diesel with the DSG box (I've also decided to go "auto"), and I was very impressed, with the car just feeling "right"

So, now comes the decision. The dealer only carries the 170 bhp diesel as a demonstrator, and I fairly certain that's the engine I want. I also want DSG due to 40 mile daily commute. I'd really like the Elegance, with the optional auto dimming mirror, heated washer jets and the tinted rear windows. Oh, and it's the estate I'll be getting.

Would I be right in thinking that, let's say I placed the order just before the end of this year, to beat the VAT increase... how would the build time affect the cost of the car? Would I be expected to pay the higher rate of VAT when the car would be delivered some 3 to 4 months later? Also, would I have to start making the monthly payments as soon as I order, or not until I have actually received the car?

I'm hoping that I wouldn't have to pay the higher VAT rate, or any of the monthly payments... and that the car could actually end up being an "11" registration as I doubt it would be ready before the end of March...

Would welcome some thoughts... :)

Did I read somewhere that Orders recieved before the end of the year are being charged at the pre-increased vat price. I don't know if it applies to the Superb as the high demand for this model seems to exclude it from many customer incentives.

Best ask your dealer....

I read somewhere recently that all Skoda cars ordered before the end of September and delivered after the increase would only have to pay 17.5% VAT - Skoda picking up the difference.

Monthly payments don't start until after you get the car

VAT is calculated, and payable, on the date of delivery of the car to the customer. Any increase will either have to be charged, or absorbed, by the Skoda Dealer.

Thanks for the replies so far. It's a shame about the VAT... unless I could get Skoda to pick up the tab... will have to see nearer the time, although it's not the end of the world as it's about £500 on the model I'm looking at. As for not starting the payments until the car is delivered, well that's good news as it means I can get the car on order sooner and be able to save even more money to put down up front :)

Cheers all

A colleague ordered an elegance 170 cr dsg Superb estate over the weekend. I think he has got a good deal, but the delivery is Feburary.

I will ask him about the vat when I see him later this week.

When VAT recently back to 17.5% from 15%, the lower VAT rate was honoured on those cars which had been ordered at 15%.

Hmm, more interesting replies... the VAT debate continues... :)

Mate of mine ordered his new motor and the dealer stated he would qulify for the VAT deal and they would honour the deal, despite long and predicted delivery dates.

My colleague who ordered his Supurb last weekend will only have to pay 17.5% when the Car is delivered in Feb. The dealer told him this is the case for all cars ordered before the end of September.

If your part exchanging your present car towards the new superb.....why dont you ask the dealer to up the p/x given on the old car....another 500 quid is nothing....but it goes a long way for them reaching the sales totals for the year when its bonuses time....see what they say....if they dont budge ....say i'll try another dealer...they might come round then and a good deal could be thrashed out...thus not having to pay the extra vat...which is too bloody high in the first place !!!!

Aye there you go rip of britain,29th september closing date for the vat deal after that who knows, I think there would be a deal of some discription but will not be the 17.5% saved myself around £3k on my fabia, part ex my glorious skoda superb mk2 1.9tdi 105 s but to long for the missus,so going for the fabia elegance with toys! :S :'(

Hmm, I'm not sure I'll be ready to place an order before the end of the month, so I may just have to accept the extra £500, or try and get the dealer to absorb it in the part-ex or with free extras. Mind you, they clearly want my order as they've given me a brand new 170CR Elegance DSG Estate to play with, for the whole weekend, for free... picked it up this evening and I drop it off again on Monday morning :) Happy days...!

Seriously considering leasing a 170CR Elegance DSG Estate how was your weekend with it ?

One word... yep, you guessed it... SUPERB...!!

Seriously though, I was very reluctant to give the keys back. Compared to my Saab 93 TiD 150bhp (manual), which although over 4 years old, is still in great condition, the Superb was...

Refined - no rattles, scuttle shake, etc. The interior is put together far better than the Saab and the quality of the dash and switchgear, door cards, etc is far better.

Quiet - the 170 TDi is nice and quiet... the Saab sounds like an old diesel Sierra by comparison!

Smooth - The ride is far better than the Saab, it soaks up the bumps very well... I had read that Skoda had got the right spot on for the UK roads... and they have! The Saab runs 17" wheels, but the Superb was still smoother on 18's with just 40 series tyres!

Sure footed - It doesn't feel like a big car, the steering is sharp and nicely weighted. I think it's active, so it's lighter when parking and heavier when at speed.

Rare - well, until they clear the 4 month waiting list (current delivery times are into January now.. week 4!) I got plenty of looks whilst out and about... ok, some where probably thinking "oh look, that poor fool drives a Skoda"... but I'm sure some where thinking "ooh, what is that?"

Full of toys - but simple too... the Saab has a gazillion buttons, which look great at night, but it's sooo cluttered compared to the Superb.

Spacious - I'm 5' 11" and in the Saab there's about 5 inches between the front and back seat... in the Superb it's more like about 15"... there's a serious amount of leg room in the front and back, yet it's only 8 inches longer than the Saab.

My only criticism is that the sat nav doesn't currently accept 7 digit post codes, but other than that it performed well, even reading out street names. It also displays the turns on the maxi dot, which is better than looking at the screen.

Some have commented that the heating controls are too low, although it didn't really bother me... once I have the right temp set, I don't really change it much.

The adaptive headlights are great fun, but also quite effective. They move about when you first start up in the dark, setting the right beam height i guess, and then you can notice them turning whilst negotiating roundabouts. The corner lights are good too, especially for lighting up side roads at slow speeds (basically one fog light comes on as soon as you start to turn at slow speed)... must look odd from outside though!

I wasn't sure about the DSG box at first, which was part of the reason I wanted the car for a longer period of time. It changes gear incredibly quickly and there's no sense of wallowy gear changes that I remember from years ago!

Needless to say, mine is now on order... complete with the DSG box B)

I knew you'd be impressed!!.

There is absolutely nothing else out there which comes close for the money..

The long wait begins...........

You're telling me...!

The last update the dealer got was three weeks ago (or that's the last update he had to hand)... it said current build weeks were week 4 of 2011...! At this rate I'll be leaving it at the dealer until March so I can get it as an 11 reg...!

Mind you, he said the lead times for the Yeti are even worse!

Hang in there. My BW was brought forward. BW40 That's next week. You might be lucky like me. Worth the wait. Good luck. Phil emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Yet another convert! Great news on placing the order. I still love getting into mine every day, it really is a pure joy to drive.
