Climatronic confusion

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've got a Polo, but it has the same climatronic unit as the Octavia's (I think), only in blue, not green. I tried searching, but didn't find much, so sorry if I overlooked the answer.

Anyway, one quick question I've got about it. I know econ disables the a/c completely, but I have a question about the auto mode. Is the a/c on or off, or does it have different amounts of load on the engine? I.e, if it's on is it always using say, 5% of engine power, or can it vary from 1% to 5% (or whatever) depending upon how hard it needs to work? So if it was just maintaining a temperature, is it possible it would cut the a/c out, and only kick in slightly if the temperature changed. Whereas if it was 10c different, would it have to work harder? Or is it always the same?

Hope that actually makes sense, although I doubt it does!

Thanks in advance,

Joe.

AFAIK, the VAG air conditioners are either on or off, not variable.

Howver, I have looked at one on a mate's leon the other day and it says 'Variable Displacement' on it. Not entirely sure waht it means though..

Ok, cheers.

Doesn't surprise me as I remeber hereing they were clutch operated or something, so I'd be quite surprised if it was variable.

Thanks again.

the compressor is variable displacement but thats more to do with even engine load i think. I "believe" the temp is regulated by the temperature flaps as in if you asked it to maintain 20deg and it was 22 outside it would run on cold with max a/c till 20deg then mix a bit of warm air/slow the fan down to keep it there

Makes sense. CheerS!

I'm pretty sure on the 6N2 you still have a clutch on the compressor. They have been done away with now from the Fabia 1 onwards, now we have constantly driven compressors than have a variable load. From 2 to 98%, the temp of inside is mainly controlled by a mixture flap though blending warm and cold air.

Ah, right. Clears it up a bit.

Thanks for all your input.
