Rain water leaking in through drivers door area.

Featured Replies

Driving back on the M1from castle coombe on sunday i got caught in a heavy down pour & after a while rain water started to drip onto my right leg! it appears to be coming past the door seal, ive had a quick search & it appears to be a common fault,i have a year left on the warranty, will this be covered? ive only had the car 3 weeks so im expecting the dealer to rectify this f.o.c. My problem is it hasnt done it since! We have heavy rain forcast here for next few days so i may keep a eye on it & if it does it again cars goes back for repair.

I've got the same problem in the back that I need to get sorted under warranty, but I'm not sure if they replace the entire seal or just mess with the existing one (I've a feeling a bit of vaseline would probably work). It is a very common fault and appears to be a generic design weakness of the seals despite there being two for the rain to penetrate (and outer flap and an inner fat squishy one)...

New door seals on mine didn't actually fix this, it seems to be too inconsistent. Same level of rain one day a drip, another day nothing.

Yes, I think it's the direction of the rain as much as anything, so probably the biggest area of weakness is the initial outside flap. On the face of it the seals seem big and you would think be enough to stop rain, but clearly they don't. I wonder if part of the problem is that the rubber feels very soft and perhaps this allows the rain to force it's way through if it is very hard and in the right direction to get under the initioal outside flap part of the seal. Strange though, as you would think by now the engineers would know what works and what doesn't in such a basic area of car design...

Might be inconsistency in how the seal sits on closing the door rather than the direction of the rain. Assuming you weren't driving in reverse the rain would always be coming from the same direction as far as a speeding car is concerned I would have thought?

Sounds a resonable theory TsvRS, but then again have you never noticed how the rain hits one side more than the other in a strong crosswind?.......................................

i noticed the this when i first bought my vrs all i did was put my knee against the door with the window down and pulled as hard as i could on the top of the door frame and its never done it since

Haha yes true enough, not going to defend my theory in that regard.

As it hasnt done it since im going to keep it under observation! :) Had a look at the seals & they look ok,will try a smear of vaseline over the area that leaked & await the next downpour!

You might be able to trace a problem with talcum powder or some other marker on the seals?

Does sound from other posts that this is a known occasional problem which isn't good.
