MFD3 Retro Fit, CAN Gateway?

Featured Replies

I want to fit an ebay sourced MFD3 to replace my Stream Head Unit.

Car is an 06 plate vRS Octavia II.

I hear I may have to update my CAN gateway, how do I know if this is the case???

Also, do I need a new surround or is it a direct replacement?

Many Thanks All

You need a new surround as the 2 units are a different size.

Do you have normal Air Con or Dual Zone? as the part no. is different

You *may* need to update the CAN. But you can try Firmware 2720 first which is modified to stop battery drain to update the unit (if it's not already updated).

My car has Dual Zone Climate Control.

How do i update to / check Firmware 2720??

The trim part no. you need is:

1Z0 858 069 L 2AU - will be about £15

Judging by the age of your car you wont have a compatible gateway. However before buying the new gateway then try this firmware first. It's 2764 and has been modified to stop battery drain. It works as i have it on mine.

You then burn that image to disc using Nero or similar. The process then is as follows

1. Unlock your car and get in Do not put key in ignition

2. Power up the RNS-510 without key in ignition, eject any CD or DVD in the RNS-510 & insert your Firmware CD

3. Unit will restart and after a couple of minutes it will ask you to press OK > wait a couple more minutes and you will get another OK to press.

4. Leave the update to run for 50 minutes > once it’s done eject the CD and reload maps from DVD.

One thing to be aware of before you put the unit in check the security seals are intact otherwise it could be a unit that is not exactly Kosher and has had the EEPROM soldered to reset the code. If you try to update one of these units you will brick it. If your security code is 1234 i wouldn't attempt the update either. Even with seals intact you could still brick it so the risk is ultimately yours.

Battery drain only occurs above 266x firmware (you will know if you have above this as you will have a speed limit display on the map screen or the ability to enable it) so unless you "NEED" SDHC card capability i'd leave it alone unless you know 100% the unit is legit.
