2.0 FSI Engine Leaking Engine Oil..

Featured Replies

Hi,

Am from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and m having a problem that's been bothering me.

Curiously, every time i park my car and leave it overnight, there will be engine oil dripping from the bottom engine cover. Sent to the workshop twice which they thought was because of bad oil filter cover (pardon my English but im not sure what is it called) and replaced it but there's still oil leaking.

The workshop could not id the origin of engine oil found on the floor. Where do you think the engine oil came from? I googled but to no avail. I could really appreciate some help from experts here in the friendly forum ~lol~

Should be an easy thing to find, impossible to help without seeing it. Try another dealer or local indy and then if they fix it, send bill to dealers.

Thats the thing. Sent it to Skoda Official SC twice but they gave the wrong diagnosis, i think.

So i send it third party workshop whose specialty is Audi VW, they were unable to find the leak. "Not from the top seal gasket" they said.

They cleaned the engine bottom cover and oil filter cover area but no leak could be seen immediately.

Sent there twice already and still engine oil could be seen after 30 miles drive.

Need to send it to them one more time for further investigation but this time round, am not sure how long.

Typical problem for FSI engine?

How old is it?

How old is it?

Mk II Octavia 2005 registered 2006. So, a little over 4 years from registration date.

Ouch. It seems engine oil leaking is unique to my FSI Octavia only.

Have you checked:

- Gearbox

- Sump plug

- Shock absorbers (really really unlikely as this would be a major fail to get any amount of oil)

- Air ducting around the EGR (again unlikely)

Gearbox - Is it possible that the gear box leaked engine oil?

Sump plug - I'll ask them the workshop verify

Shocks - just replaced it a few months ago

Air ducting around the EGR? - where is this exactly? what is EGR?

Hi Aarifin,

I had a similar problem with my 2.0 FSI Sport, except mine only appeared to leak when I left it parked on a slope facing uphill . I too couldn't find any immediate evidence of a leak and couldn't work out why it only appeared to happen when the car was parked uphill. It turned out to that the leak was coming from the oil filter, dropping onto a cover below and then onto the ground (my drive) when the car was at a sufficient angle for it to run off. A new oil filter and a clean round the cover fixed my problem, but surely this has already been done with yours.

SWyPER,

Exactly. When parked on slope but im not sure if the oil was coming out uphill or when facing downhill.

Im planning to send it ASAP but too occupied with work that i have to wait until weekend.

They have replaced the new filter then but there's still engine oil dripping when parked on slopes ( cos my porch is sloping).

So your problem is gone after filter replacement? even when you park on slope facing uphill?

If you have the oil filter changed make sure they put the new rubber seal on the lid (assuming it's this type) because otherwise it will leak.

TBH I hadn't even considered that as an option, but it certainly is one to check.

As for the EGR it's an exhaust gas recycler but you wouldn't get regular large amounts of oil out of it as the pipework tends to just collects oil from the oily air coming out of the engine and breather system.

Yes my problem cleared once the filter had been changed. I believe that the only reason the oil seemed to leak when parked uphill is because the oil was collecting on the cover but needed the slope to tip it over the edge. I suspect that the leak was always there. As Cheezemonkhai says, make sure that the new filter is sealed properly, but then also ensure that the cover is clean otherwise any oil that's collected on the cover will make it look like you still have a leak.

I've read a couple of times of cases of the oil filter housing leaking - where it fits to the engine block.

Your Totally solved? Thats good news but my problem still persist after numerous oil filter replacement..

Initially i thought that there could be gasket failure somewhere between oil sump and upper engine housing so on slope, some engine oil made its way out.

Sent my car on Saturday afternoon and today the workshop called me

" Leak at "O" ring somewhere above the oil filter". I wonder where could that be?

The workshop guy said "We cant replace just the o ring but we have to change the whole unit"

I wonder what is it. What is located above oil filter with an "O" ring?

If the O ring is there, it must be replaceable aint it not? I take it that they are still sourcing for parts and im left without a car until then.

It may be something else altogether cos mine still leak even after they replaced the filter housing. Ill update accordingly. Perhaps, ill try to get some photo of whats replaced (and touch wood) hoping the problem is permanently rectified.

Assuming your oil filter is the paper element that fits in a permanent housing, when you buy a new filter it will come with a new o-ring for the plastic lid that fits above filter and seals it.

If the old o-ring is used and the new one not fitted, then there is a chance it will leak and if there is none fitted it will leak.

I can only assume it is this they are talking about and if so ask them why the o-ring doesn't come with the filter and not the housing.

I have a box of diesel oil filters and they all come with new o-rings in the box.

Any pictures would help a lot.

The workshop called again and quoted that the replacement of the whole unit of "oil filter set which is attached together with engine cooling unit" is Rm2500 ( thats approx GBP500 ) which kinda caught me by surprise. I mean, really? So i tell them not to replace it yet. Ill try to source the part elsewhere and get them to replace it for me.

The problem is, im not sure what is it exactly called? Oil filter sump? Anyone care to shed a light on the actual name for it? No photo cos i could not go to the workshop.

Maybe they are talking about the oil cooler in the bottom of the oil filter housing?

Good day everyone.

Went to the workshop to take my car and while i was there, i snapped a few photos of the engine oil cooling unit from an audi engine.

Now how do i insert a photo in the thread?

I tried a few times but was prompted with error msg

"You are not allowed to use that image extension on this board."

I have pasted short cut to the photo.

Not exactly similar to Skoda's unit but something similar. I was unable to take photo of mine cos they have already assembled the engine cover and patched to the leaking area with silicon.

Could anyone suggest where can i get the part from and have it shipped to Malaysia? Any seller doing international shipping?
