ECU Swapping

Featured Replies

Alright Folks.

Just a quick question. I know of a Octy RS with a Jabba remap and the car in question is for sale. The owner has said that i can have the boost controller etc from his car for a price and if it was possible to switch ECU's then that aswell so i don't need to drive to Jabba to get my octy RS mapped.

Does anyone know if this is possible, i mean a straight swap is simple but, are Jabba's maps engine specific, or are they mapped different for each individual engine, if you know what i mean  .

Just a thought, oh and it saves me a few quid ;)

Cheers

Think you will find the ECU is tied to the instrument cluster in the car.

If I was you I would speak to the people at JabbaSport they are very helpful and will not bit your head off for asking :)

Sounds good to me. Had'nt done that yet because i assumed that they would say no straight away, to get

You need the immobiliser code of your instrument panel, normally located on the back of it IIRC (so need to remove it, easy job)

Then I'm also sure you need to have the same code which is plumbed into the new ECU, so you can tell it to change from XXXX that it was on before to XXXX which is on the back of your instrument panel. I've done this and now have the choice of driving Jabba'd or un-jabba'd. Funnily enough, the unjabba'd ECU has only come out in the event of one problem and spends the rest of its time in a clear plastic box, getahering dust, labelled "other ECU".

Edit: from what I can gather above if you wanted to kind of "swap cars" then you'll need to swap immobiliser codes for your std one to work in the previously jabba'd car, and the mapped one to work in yours. I would always say to get it re-jabba'd anyway, as no one map is perfect for another car. When I first swapped mine over it was at 145bhp, due to it not being mapped for that car, and the exhaust + filter I had had done. Jabba took it and tweaked it up to 154bhp. This was for free, but then I had already paid for their remap, you haven't ;)

In my view, you don't want to be swapping the complete ECUs, why not just put the original PROM (Jabba will have given it to the owner) back in the car to be sold, and put Jabba's chip, complete with piggyback board, in your car?

This way you avoid all the immob. problems. The boost controller will be fairly straightforward to move between cars, it works by interrupting the MAP sensor, which IIRC is a single line on the ECU.

Having said all this, the Jabba map *is* car-specific and may well need a tweak to be at its best in a new engine.

Thanks for all the help folks. I'll give Jabba a call and see what they say. If it's no then it will be an APR map for me becuase they are the closest and seem to know their stuff.

The ECU swapping thing was just a thought because we swap the ECU's in and out of our EVO rally car on a daily basis, oh and i'm skint after christmas. Oh well

Also if you ever need to get new keys coded having the "wrong" ECU in the car could cause complications when the dealer contacts Skoda.
