Vrs - Sound's Like A Diesel On Cold Start.

Featured Replies

New to this malarky..but here goes.

Has anyone experienced a loud knocking/tapping noise from the top of the engine on cold start ? -- only last's for 2-5 seconds but it's louder than next doors LDV van!!!.

Car done 6,400 miles, oil level correct and using correct oil type.Only occurs on first start - local Skoda dealer "never heard of that before!" - can't say does it every time but I'm getting increasingly worried that my little "Skud Missile" is going to go BANG!

Sept'03 Octavia vRS-Black Magic.:drive1:

Yeah, have exactly the same. Thought it was discussed before as well, but the only thing I seem to remember that it is not a problem and quite common? I'm sure someone will use the search button for me ;)

Q.

Oh, and I just noticed...

Welcome to the black magic motor club :D Although I'm not sure how you managed to get a September 03 vRS? Do you live in the same timezone as us? :D

Doh! of course I ment Sept'02......

Thank's for the reply - just wanted to see if anyone had same-because I work for an Audi Dealer - we have seen loads - A3's,TT's(180&225) and some A4's using the 1.8T engine, anyway in some severe cases we have replaced the variable cam tensioner - and so far none have come back. Think I'll tackle my Skoda dealer see if they are prepared to do it - as even though our Technician's say it's ok it drives me mad that my old car(MK2 Golf GTi-165,000 miles) was like a swiss watch on cold start....let you know how I get on.

Welcome:D

Don't worry about the noise I think their all the same

My 4X4 sounds like a diesel for a couple of seconds after a cold start. Not particularly loud, nor am I worried by it. The engine is otherwise quiet and smooth.

O.K Guy's guess I'll just monitor it, can't complain about anything else on the car tho -- absolutely fantastic, would not go back to VW or Audi in future(probably shouldnt say that working for them!)but can't justify the difference in cost/spec/performance.

Drives my boss mad that I won't buy an Audi..............even worse when I tell him I already do drive mostly an Audi(important bits anyway).

Thinking about getting it jabba'd but concerned about warranty / insurance - I know warranty can be an issue ,but does anyone know what effect on insurance ??

Anything between refusing to insure it to a 10-20% increase in premium. Whatever you do, ask the insurance company first and make sure they don't increase your premium anyway (as has happened to someone on the forums whose name has slipped me).

Norwich Union Direct won't continue to insure my 4X4 if I chip it.

That's what worries me -- don't want any extra aggro - you can't win if you ask & it's too much it might be on record - then if you have a bump they play silly Bug#*!s.

Still it would be nice to show a certain TT225 owner near me what my tailpipe look's like !!!

And can I just add what a friendly bunch you all seam - this being my first bash at this type of thing, and reading some of the banter going back and forth is great :mw:

P.S now that I've come to my senses - does anyone want a dismantled(going to restore it ya'know!) SIIa SWB 2.25 Diesel landrover ? - NO - thought not - too sensible

Banter? Yes, there are a few members who don't take anyone or anything seriously - apart from the colour of their cars, the size of their wheels, the shape of their exhaust pipe, the car polish they use, the carpet shampoo they have to use etc etc. You'll spot them soon enough. :(

Yep , mine sound like a TDI for a few secs as it starts up , has since new and never got any better (or worse!) Doesnt seem to affect performance or reliability of the car tho , only the dreaded coil packs have stopped my Skud so far (You will be familiar with those working at an Audi dealers eh Skodaw?? lol!)

Give me the details of the LR and I'll post them on the LR list I'm on , someone will want it .

Oh God! - don't mention coils - we at one stage had 72 yep SEVENTY TWO cars off road waiting for coils 1 of which went off road 1/12/02 - the customer got it back 30/03/03 !!!.

We had to hire off site storage to cope - which Audi had to cover the cost of.

the costs of car hire on AVERAGE per car off road was

I can report that mine also sounds like a TDi for a few hours after start up

;) ;)

860 miles (and counting).

Yes, it sounds like a diesel when first started :)

I've never used Norwich Union since when I had my 323 4x4 Turbo in the early 90's. At the height of the 'hot-hatch' insurance debacle, they wanted to put my premium up by 35% at renewal time despite no changes or claims !

Since then I've found Privilege (RBS/Direct Line) to be very helpful on the subject of :-

a) Enchanced engine management systems (their term, not mine!)

B) Non-competitive track days.

They do charge you for 'a)' - my car is the equivalent of group 16 rather than 13 now, but at least they do not pull down the hatches and show you the door...

Mines at 93,000 still sounds like a diesel on start up. Maybe thats why the V5 said it was a TDI Elegance?

That's no diesel sound - it's the 1.8T's high-performance burble! :D

And I luv'it...

Are you sure that it isn't a diesel masquerading as a vRS? IIRC, Jon, your car was parked at a diesel pump when I saw it last week!

Must check my brochure.

My problem is worse.............. my pd130 sounds like a vRS when started. Will I ever live the shame of it down?:(

Cheers

OK people, what you are hearing in the morning/cold start is your Hidraulic Cam Lifter. This is because this part does not receive oil quickly to lubricate it.

Thats why you hear the noise only for a few seconds and then disapear.........Because for that few second the part is not receiving oil to get lubricated but as soon it get oil is stop making the sound.

I have a friend with a Audi A4 that use to have the same problem every morning. He change his oil to 0W-30 viscosity and the problem disapear.

0W is thiner and it fluid/lubricate better in cold start.

So you people that have this Noise problem, what oil viscosity you are using???

Isaac

Castrol 0W-30 SLX 2 Longlife in conjunction with variable servicing. Only the best is good enough for my 4X4. :D

I've run with long life oil on an A4 also without a problem. What's strange though is that 0W can sometimes cause problems on other cars. I had a Legacy Turbo that I ran on 0/40 Mobil 1 a few years back and it was starting to sound tappety when I sold it. When I got my Impreza 3 years later, the dealers were saying that 0W was too thin for the same reason.
