polish after wax?

Featured Replies

a ew days after polishing and waxing my car i want to add a coat of auto glym SRP, is this ok and wont remove the existing layer of wax?

thanks

The SRP should have gone on first as it contains fillers for the light scratches and swirls, then followed by final polish, sealant and then wax.

If you have used a natural wax and you coat over with the SRP then you risk getting a hazy finish over time. ie the wax as nowhere to go if it breaks down quicker than the polymer based SRP, at best the SRP coat will be pointless.

IMO you would be better off just washing and waxing as required over winter or if you need to use the SRP for filling then start fresh with a wash/clay/ couple of coats of srp/ sealant/ then wax.

Then wash and top up with wax as required over winter.

yes, applying polish on over the wax will strip the existing wax off.

If you want to apply it properly, clay the car back, then apply SRP, then apply the wax.

I wouldn't use AG SRP anyway - too much powdery residue. I prefer the three step Meguiars system, with a thorough clean and all three steps in the spring and using the No 3 every three or four weeks through the year.

AGSRP is very very good and should not produce too much residue if applied correctly

ALWAYS apply a sealer and/or wax on top IMO

SRP is excellent if you don't use loads of it at a time, and you have to really work it in to get the best of it. Too many people just wipe it on, let it dry then wipe it off, which is where you get the powdery residue.

I thought the Megs 3-step system was pants, there was just no durability for the effort.

This is exactly what I had done for years .... however a couple of weeks ago I did SWMBO's MK5 Golf, only this time it was done by machine (Makita BO6040) rather than by hand, and guess what no more powdery bits, which looks like it was caused by using far too much polish, this is almost inevitable when it is applied by hand.

Not quite, but you will end up with arms like Popeye :giggle: It does seem to come into its own via machine.

Tell me about it, my hand polishing days are now over, I always worked it well into the paint rather than just wiped on, but it was always 'kin hard work :giggle:
