fun idle problems now

Featured Replies

my little fun keeps cutting out now !! iv only just managed to get it mot'ed . and now this ... it will start every time on the key if its cold or hot the idle is at around 500 when it holds . i have to hold the gas on to stop it cutting out most of the time , if i go for a run in it and pull up at a round about it will cut out . some times if it doesnt cut out the revs drop to nearly 0 and back up to 500 .but it seems to drive ok once its going and the revs are fine its only when idling , what could this be ?? why would the revs be so low now ??

cheers ric

try restting the throttle body adaption then adjust the base ignition timing.. if it's not this then it will almost certainly need a new throttle boidy

My 1.6 did something similar when I accidentally drove it with the coolant temperature sensor disconnected, although that was on a cold day with a stuck-open thermostat so it never got properly warmed up either.

tef how do i do the restting thing , do i need a vag com ... can i just take off the throttle body to give it a clean and put it back on with no problems ? sick of spending money so its all up to me now ..

yes you do need vag-com, but it should self adapt over time assuming there's no mechanical problems with the throttle housing

i wipped the throttle body off gave it a clean it was pretty black inside from burning oil. popped it back on and it seems to run sweet, idles about 800 and started off the key with no gas went for a run round with not a problem at all ,, but i had bein using it today so it wasn't cold ill see what it like in the morning from cold fingers crossed

it still idles low from cold and nearly cuts out , but if i run it for 5 or 10 mins its ok so i can cope with that . now for the smoking !! its blue/ white smoke it dosent happen in the morning it only seems to happen when iv come down a hill and apply the gas , is this pointing to the piston rings ?

more likely to be valve seals, if it were the piston rings it would do is all the time
