Rear Exhaust Bracket MOT failure

Featured Replies

the 1.9 tdi is booked in for MOT end of week . Having a check round noticed that the Rear Bracket supporting the back box is rusted and some breaking away , but enough still to hold it on tight . How bad does it need to be for a failure , as the Box itself is in good condition . Just dont want to get done over on an expensive exhaust at the MOT . Thanks

Is it the actual hanger iron or is it just the little bracing triangle?

If it's just the bracing then there is no problem. The actual iron is 8-9 mm in diameter and is pretty strong.

The MOT question is "Is it In such condition that it does not fully support the exhaust system"

Its not the Iron hook part , but the part wellded to the Back Box , the Iron from what i can see is still welded to the Box , pulled down there is no movement at all

I've had that bracket break on my vRS & the wife's Bora recently. My mechanics just cleaned the area up & welded it. £10 each time

Sounds exactly like mine, and there was no prob on recent MOT (at least not on the exhaust unless you count it needing a new cat!!)

I knocked away all the loose rust and tidied up the remaining rust to make it look like it was supposed to be shaped like that though. ;)

But as others have said the support bar is very sturdy underneath what's basically surface rust.

Does your tailpipe now tilt slightly downwards on the right hand side btw?

Done a little tidy up job , looks better now , still very sturdy . Can not see any difference in left or right side . Thanks
