what a night! AGAIN!

Featured Replies

last week my vrs broke down due to the top pipe off the radiator somehow managing to blow itself to bits... then tonight...

stopped behind a car which was turning off the road. went to set off normally and there was a thud and the turbo screamed like an air raid siren. the car lost power but managed to drag itself to the top of the hill and into the pub car park(which was shut!?!?!)

recovery came out and had a quick look and said if the turbo had blown then there should be plumes of black smoke. he reckons its just a boost hose that's blown!

(fingers crossed)

so i was wondering if anyone on here has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated?

oh and how much would a new turbo be if it is that plz?

cheers

That "thud" could be the noise of the boost hose popping off. Fingers crossed it is that. Never heard the air-raid siren comparison before though.

New turbo you are looking at £1,000 roughly for brand new, and if you were to find a low mileage one on Ebay, probably £200-£250 then labour.

as in oil coming from the turbo itself?

so no oil should mean its ok and a pipes just burst off. i mentioned that guy who had the same problem...but he didnt mention a thud or anything like that.

any idea how big a job it is to change a turbo? me and my mate are pretty competent when it comes to DIY mechanics.

cheers

it was light when it first happened and my first reaction was to look out the back window for some reason... all i saw was a load of dust kick up

recovery guy shone a light at the exhaust while i revd engine slightly and he said there was no noticable smoke, other than the usual levels.

just oil in the general area of the engine bay / turbo showing up that its pooped itself

you can't really tell untill you have a look, my guess would be if its a popped hose it will be either the bottom or top intercooler one, meaning you'll have to take your bumper off to fix it!

you may be able to tell without taking it off though

thanks for your time! ill check if its had a little accident first thing in the morning and have a look round all the hoses when i get home

just been looking at another thread on here where a blue one had quite a bit of oile spattered round the engine bay. i think it was the the top pipe at fault. not seen any oil from the top one so fingers crossed its the bottom one

cheers

Never ever heard of the dreaded turbo siren with boost pipe popping off. Have popped pipes of before with loud pop and plumes of black smoke but never turbo noise.

How loud was turbo siren noise? this usually builds up over time rather than just happening. Doesn't sound good IMO.

yeah its usually an awful bang (you poo yourself) while nearly smacking your gob on the steering wheel

followed by masses of black smoke and sssssshhhhhshhhh (leaking masses of boost)

then 5 mins later all is peaceful again as you go into limp mode ahhhh

so i have just had a good look at the car

all boost hoses are attached where they should be

there is no oil spillage

cant find any splits in the hoses but can hear a hissing noise but cant tell whether it is an air leak or the alternator

and the whining is coming directly from the turbo :'(

do these turbos have wastegates?

ash

uhoh doesnt sound good

air raid / police siren = guffed turbo

yup thout so :'(

cant understand why there is no smoke though?! seen videos on youtube and they have white smoke billowing out due to a blown turbo...

i got quoted £430 today for a recon unit.

how much labour u reckon it would be?

yeah £400 to £450 is good for a recon turbo ,

if you have a full tool chest and time to do it its just a case of changing the exhaust manifold and connecting it back up,

or if you cant be arsed i would say 3 hours at a garage ? ish ,

mine has just been done as skoda for £1300 + labour :D they had it 2 days ! , but it was warranty work
