Living with a Greenline II.

Well had my GL2 for nearly 6 months now and driven more than 6000 mile in it with two engines. This engine has done just over 4000 miles I calculate my cars mpg is 5% out and on long runs 1.3% on fill to fill. I am starting to see some of my town journeys showing 70 mpg (66 mpg) and combined 80mpg (76mpg).

I traveled down to Wembley at the weekend and averaged 65.5 mpg with four adults in the car and traveling at or just under the speed limit.

Getting to that alledge cusp now, will the mpg improve?

Dempsek, yes it will...should go on getting better in terms of mpg and even power output for thousands of miles yet. When it gets to 20k it should definitely be showing some improvement. this has always been my experience and I've proven it on the Dyno too for both motorcycles and petrol and diesel cars over the years. Diesel car engines definitely show the biggest improvement at that mileage. After that it depends on what fuel you are using as to whether you continue to make any further limited gains. For example, supermarket or some other lesser branded fuels that use only secondary cleaning agents will start to make the engine dirty inside and this will negate the normal savings and slight extra power you normally get with cleaner burning fuels that use both 1st grade and 2nd grade cleaning agents. So, an owner won't notice any further improvements, and will think the car is going just fine. Of course...it is! But you just dont get any further mpg or power increase compared to others who use better quality fuels. Performance can also start to degrade much earlier too with the dirtier burning fuel...something else that in the trade we noticed on the dyno. It is noticeable for most people. You seem to be doing really well with your new engine. Well done!

Hi - I'm contemplating placing an order for a Fabia Greenline 2 estate and was a bit concerned that you are already on your second engine. Is there a fault with them or were you just unlucky?

Just unlucky, VW mucked up with the engine and my local dealer noticed the strange sound coming from the three pot.

I have no problems with saying the GL2 is a very good car and light on fuel. I use my car as the only family car and it spends a lot of its time fully loaded and can keep up with the traffic.

CT17 will correct me if I am wrong, he got his estate for his company and has decided to keep it for commuting to work in London.

Estateman thanks for the reply, I probably would not be too concerned about MPG but for two reasons the obvious one price and the new engine seems to be no better than the wonky one.

What I will say is early on I would see some trips in town show 60-64 and now I am seeing 60-64 as almost the norm with some 68-71 MPG trips.

Driven over to Towyn North Wales for Easter and fully loaded 70mpg. Towyn to Rhyl/Prestatin on coast road 68 MPG on clock allow for 5% over record that's about 65 MPG.

Thanks for your help - I'll have to be quick making a decision if I don't want a 2012 car!! Thanks again.

You are right.

Saving a fortune compared to the TDV8 Rangie and (gasp-shock) I actually like driving it. :D

Fuel savings alone are getting on for £100 per week.

No wonder you are :) about using the car for work.

I also presume you are saving another £50 a week on congestion charges.

Just on fuel alone in less than 3 years the car has paid for its self in fuel savings

I don't need to go into the congestion charge zone every day funnily enough.

But I still worked it out as:

£100 Fuel

£115 Depreciation (6k extra per year)

£8 Road Tax

£2 Insurance

So still over £220 per week better off.

Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick anyday. :D
