vRS vs Polo GT TDi

Featured Replies

Hi all,

looking at Fabia vRS's, but decent ones close to me are looking to be hard to come by. I have however found a Polo GT TDi (same engine & gearbox as the Fabia). I'm assuming it's the same mechanically in pretty much every respect, but just wondered if anyone knew of any majour differences or issues?

Assuming it's gonna respond the same to mapping etc in the same way as the Fabia too?

Cheers,

Joe.

Cheers, makes interesting reading. All seem to say pretty much as the large magazines say; doesn't justify the extra price over the Fabia. Not that that's an issue for me as I can't find any Fabias to compare agaisnt! In terms of ride, I'm used to something a lot more firmy sprung than a Fabia, so even if the Polo is a bit stiffer, chances are it's still softer than what I've got now.

Cheers, what I was hoping to hear really.

Agreed, not a fan of the Polos appearance vs. Fabias, but that doesn't really bother me. More sleeper effect.

also i've always remembered the fabia vrs's suspension as standard to be quite stiff? a bit of roll yes but quite stiff never the less :wonder:

it has been a few years however

I drove one (vRS) at the weekend, and while it was a pretty short test drive, it gave the impression of being a lot softer than my Polo, and more rolly.

Either way, I guess I'll see what the suspension is like if I get to drive one properly. Pretty subjective I guess too.

Thanks,

Joe.

Go to General Car Chat - BeezerDiesel has done a superb review of the vRS, Polo GTi & Polo GT.

Brilliant, just what I wanted to hear. Thanks.

Badges mean little to me, price/ avaliabilty are more important.

Used to own a 1.2 Polo before I got my vRS. The thing was when it came to look for a new car I was looking at the Polo GT, only problem was I couldn't find any in the range I was willing to drive. The only one I could find was just over a 100 miles away and had been the previously owned by some boy racer who had, and to be nice, 'stuck a load of **** all over it to make it look faster.'

After looking at alternatives I happened on the fact that the vRS was exactly the same as the Polo GT, yeah I was a bit badge snob at first but got over it quick when I found that you could actually find decent examples of the vRS close to where I lived. I am glad I went for the vRS as the Polo shape with the google eyes is starting to look a bit old now were as the vRS seems to be standing up fairly well. Oh and as for reliability and VW vs Skoda, I owned the Polo for four years and every year I had at least something go wrong with it.

Year 1 = Ignition coil 2 (a supposed common fault)

Year 2 = Ignition coil 1 (replaced 1 and 3 this time round)

Year 3 = Broken coil spring

Year 4 = Unspecified rattle from rear passenger followed by failure of one of the engine temp sensors, Fixed the sensor but near found out what was causing the rattle before I sold it

I will have owned my vRS for one year come November and besides the documented issues, stutter and leaky door seals (both of which I have fixed) I haven't had any issues with the car.

A set of coilovers will sort that suspension out.

Will be setting up a group buy/for sale post for some D2 ones in the next few days when my freedom membership is sorted.

Just outta interest...

Seeing as you've owned a Fabia, and have a 6n2 Polo.. and now your looking at a 9n?

How would you rate the Fabia's interior against the VW's, cuz I persoanlly find the small VW's have horribly styled dash boards. I looked at a Lupo GTi before the vRS while I owned an older Fabia... all a bit "young" (god, I'm well past my 28).. lol

Don't ya find the Fabia's subtle yet solid approach so much nicer to sit it.. just the way the dash blends into the door card tops etc etc? My mate recons it's boring... he drove a C2..

If ya do plump for the 9n GT... see if ya can't find one with the optional BBS San Marino's fitted

Wouldn't mind some coilovers, but insurance man wouldn't be best pleased.

Compared to my Fabia having more faults in a shorter time, the Polo looks appealing.

Year 1 = piston rings

Year 1 = broken coil spring

Year 1 = broken air con

Year 1 = brooken steering rack (£700 :o )

Year 1 = sold.

Sounds like most of the faults you had were engine specific, and the PD130 seems pretty robust on the whole, so they shouldn't be an issue I hope.

Looking at anything based on the Polo/Fabia chassis really, just want a PD130 engine on that platform. Got rid of the 1st Fabia as it was an AUB engine, and was dying. The Polo is only going as I need a deisal sadly - love the car, but the financial side says to swap it.

I guess the interior is a matter of taste really, eye of the beholder and all that. Personally, I quite like the interior styling of the 6n2, esp. the dash dails which are seperate for revs and speed. Quite like the blue lighting too, as long as it's turned down. I think the door cards are nicer than the Fabias, just a bit softer on the elbow. The dash and doors do blend together a bit on the Polo too. Agreed the Lupo dash is missing something though. In terms of quality, I'd say it's pretty much equal, although think the Fabia had nicer feeling plastics, but more rattles.

I would say the Fabia is a bit bland, but I still liked it. Reckon it's gonna appeal to more people though. Has more of a big car feel too which helps. Not sat in the new 9n/3 Polos yet, only thought of them last night so can't really comment. Can see why he'd say it was boring compared to a C2 - not that that means the C2 was nice!

Would very much like the BBS's, got some on this and they are nice wheels.

Can't argue with any of that...

My mapped GT polo to 176 BHP and 280 Foot ponuds of torque can easily out run a 180 brake fabia. Raced 3 all mapped to the same brake, and has blew past them all....

According to parkers, the fabia is actually 5kg less than your polo. They have the same engine, so can you guess what I can smell? Starts with B ends in IT? ;)

So the explanation is what then?

Heavier car but same engine running gear etc and you blew past them?

1. Your a better driver

2. They werent trying

3. Crap maps?

Either way nothing to do with the fact its a Polo rather than a Fabia.
