DSG - Silly Question (?)

Featured Replies

If you have the DSG in manual mode does it over-ride stupid decisions?

Example - If I were to try to move off in 7th gear would it change down or stall? Or if I tried to select a gear that would cause it to over-rev would it stop me doing it?

Day 2 with my new DSG and it surprised me! Going down a long winding descent behind an eejut crawling along at 30-35. Had the footbrake on lightly all the way down, DSG clearly detected this and dropped 3 gears to 4th to give me engine braking. How clever is that? I love it!!

Yes it overrides any obvious errors...only issue I've had with mine in the past year was trying to set off in snow, it just wouldn't let me set off in 2nd...other than that the only other thing with a vRS DSG is pulling out of a junction, it'll usually drop down to first if you come anywhere near stopping, but then once you've twisted the wheel you have to either remember the paddles are the wrong way around or wait until you've straightened the wheel, by which point the revs are (in my case) quite high!

Yes, a dsg box would never be in 7th gear at a standstill anyway as it would detect that you are slowing down and even in manual mode will change down when the engine revs drop to near tickover, I have done this many a time when I have forgotten I was in manual mode and slowed down. It will also stop you changing down if the mechatronics detect that to do so would cause the engine to overrev. However it will not change up if you are accelerating and have got to the rev limiter, you must change up yourself then.

Handbook says it will change up automatically just short of max revs in manual mode. Haven't dared rev mine to those limits yet...not much point with a diesel.

In the sport mode does your's go well into the red before changing up. The first few times were slightly worrying as I would have changed up much earlier.

The 1.8 TSi engine in great isn't it!

It is a fantastic engine!

Errmmm Yes it does! Put it in sports mode to pull an overtake and was pretty horrified to see the rev counter at 6500rpm vs redline at 6000.

I don't think I will do that again until it has a few more miles under its belt. It only has 150miles (distance not speed!) on the clock at the moment.

Mine changes up itself just at it gets near the redline even in manual mode, really annoying if I flick the paddle for an up change just as the car does so meaning I go up two gears instead of 1....

Maybe the 7 speed and 6 speed ones work differently?

Ha my seven speed was changing up at 6,500 today in D. Me thinks is had adapted to the rather hurried journey into work this morning lol

i really wanted a dsg equiped car but i had a choice at the time as we only have the se spec cars at work, so it was either the 1.9pd tdi with the dsg or the 2.0pd tdi, i went for the power which is great but i would have loved the elegance with the 2.0 and dsg, never mind only two and a half years before its due to be replaced, bring on the vrs tdi and dsg.
