Misfire, stutter. What?

Featured Replies

Had the car 1 week. Till today been excellent.

Filled up with Shell v power diesel on Wednesday. Today had terrible misfire or stuttering in all gears. Only went when flooring the throttle.

Is the fuel crap or do I have an issue with the engine? When I collected it the dealer filled the tank at Morrisons. Till I filled up at Shell it was great.

Confused and a little ****ed off that such a great car seems potentially flawed.

Do I blame Skoda or Shell?

Sorry to hear that, but on the Fabia forum there has been a debate about fuels, mainly to be fair involving the new TSI petrol engines but Shell V Power seems to be the fuel of choice for a lot of the owners with many saying that they wouldnt use Supermarket fuels. I wonder if you got a bad batch from one particular garage although I cant imagine you would want to try Shell again!!

When i bought my new Octy a few years ago I filled up with some "dodgy" fuel which happened to be Shell also. The car ran quite rough and the economy was poor. The problem went away during the consumption of the next couple of tankfuls. I have had no issues with the smoothness and economy with my Superb. I am tempted to blame the fuel .

Blame Skoda, my Passat has a 1500rpm cold miss on it, all depends what the outside air is like as to whether it plays up or not, quite a few owners comment on it, and I believe as no code shows up, VW say it's normal :wonder:

Thanks for the answers so far.

Going for a test spin this morning to see if it's still there. If so will try and get it hooked up at the dealers (long trip planned Monday)

Thanks to Supurbia's response I'll concentrate on the revs and see if it's also around the 1500 mark

I never use V-Power diesel in mine, although its currently running a tank of that new shell diesel whos name escapes me. Usually run on Tesco or Asda, but I needed to fill up on the M3 at Winchester services. Since puting this shell fuel in it seems to be more difficult to warm start so I will not be using this fuel again either.

You may have a problem with the engine, but as it was ok until you refilled with fuel, its much more likely that you have got a batch of contaminated fuel. Problem is, that contamination might, if you are unlucky, do permanent damage to injectors etc.

I recall a thread here some time ago when I talked about contaminated fuel and was told that was rubbish in this day and age. Unfortunately, it is not rubbish, fuel can get contaminated in lots of ways. Simple water contamination will cause horrendous misfires and damage injectores for example.

I drove 170 miles yesterday, variety of motorway, A road and town. Over hills and round bends.

Not sure what to blame now. Generally, the car was fine, on the way home I had the stutter quite badly - around the 1500 RPM mark.

I'll reserve judgement until I can refill the tank with BP and see if that makes a difference.

Local dealer (Mitchell Skoda in Ellesmere Port) have not returned my call and Shell haven't responded to an e-mail asking if any other drivers have remarked on the fuel quality.

Let's wait and see!

Other than that I am so pleased I bought the car. Love it. (other than the fact I received two calls to find out the BT had disconnected my Nokia). I wish they'd sort out iPhone compatibility too.

I'm almost certain it is a software issue, mine only does it when cold, and it stops once normal op temp is obtained, I think it's the car not knowing how much choke is required, hence the software bit, so in effect you could be running the setting's for a warm engine when the engine is cold and this will cause weaker than required fuel to be used.

It might be that, but mine does it when its warm too, although it is worse when it's cold. I've done 25,000 miles now and there is just no pattern to it - it does it on all makes of diesel (I do alot of miles in France and Germany) and the problem is still there. It doesn't do it regularly, and typically, when you take it to the dealer they can't make it do it either lol....

I also have a strange buzz from the back once I get below half full in the diesel tank. The dealer said it was the tank lift pump, so replaced it - but it still does it! I might get them to look at it again lol
