Should I have moved over?

Featured Replies

If the golf could undertake, there must of been room. Obviously not seeing it i dont know for sure, but if he could get under the OP the gap must of been of some size. This is hugely tempting if your getting frustrated.

But that said, from the description the Golf driver shouldnt of done what they did.

2 wrongs dont make a right :)

It is difficult to be sure what action would be best without observing the situation.

From the description, my general observation is that the driver undertaking at speed was a fool, risking his own life as well as that of others.

However, on the roads these days you need to:

1) be aware of everything that is happening around you.

2) drive defensively, maintaining a safe zone around your vehicle.

Even then there will be idiots who will put your life and theirs at risk to save a few seconds on their journey time.

If I was in the position suggested, and I noticed a driver coming up behind me very fast I would , if there was room, pull over and let the idiot past. If however there was not sufficient room to pull over, then I would close the gap so that he couldn't undertake, if necessary by increasing my speed significantly. Indeed, if I saw the fast driver coming up behand, I would have completed the over take as quickly as possible.

But just to give an idea of the standard of idiot out there, I will relate an experience of my own.

Some 3 or 4 years ago, I was coming down the M4 at about 75 on cruise control. It was dark and I was in the nearside lane. I approached a car in the nearside lane with 2 cars parallel to it in the middle lane. There were also cars in the nearside and middle lanes a little further ahead.

I indicated and gradually moved out to the offside lane to overtake. As I did so, the second car in the middle lane also move out to overtake, so my overtaking move was temporarily blocked. Slowing a little, I waited in the offside lane for the other car to move back into the middle lane.

As I waited a Range Rover came up behind me in the offside lane. Without hesitation, it swerved left onto the hard shoulder, drove past the cars and then swerved across in front of them into the offside lane to pass the cars further ahead. It certainly shook me at the time. But it just shows how stupid people can be!!!!!!!!!
