Smell of petrol inside the g'friends fiesta

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Didn't really know where else to put this...

My girlfriend has a Fiesta Zetec 1.25 and there is a smell of petrol inside the car, i have checked filler cap etc and thats all ok - wheres best to start looking, anyone know?

Thanks

What age is the car?

I take it you've checked the fuel lines under the bonnet, including the injector leak off pipes?

If you can't find anything obvious, then get it towed to a garage and checked out as otherwise there is a very good chance of a fire.

If it's the MkIV, my dad has exactly the same problem.

He's had the car a couple of years, and everywhere he's taken it, they've all said it's normal and nothing to worry about as there are no signs of leaking.

Check if you hear a rush of air or a fizzy sort of noise when you take the petrol cap off, if you don't then you need to replace the orange/black rubber gasket on the petrol cap.

I had this on both my 2 Fiesta Zetec S's and my Ford Racing Puma, basically the rubber wears on the seal and fumes escape.

Unfortunately you cannot buy a new rubber gasket on its own, you need to buy the whole petrol cap, iirc it costs £15 then simply swap the rubber gaskets over.

Obviously worth checking for fuel leaks etc as mentioned above too, just in case.

It's a P reg - Fuel line checked and no obvious signs of a leak, i don't know what the leak off pipes are but i checked the injector area and nothing,

I think this could be it as it has a crappy aftermarket garage jobby thats just a plug!!

Thanks for all the input lads, much appreciated.

Check the fuel filter, often located close to the tank, a small cylinder with a fuel pipe going in one end from the tank & fuel lines coming out the other end.

They can corrode & leak. A cheap fix though.

Depending on the fiesta they can sometimes be under the bonnet too, but certainly worth checking as I had a friend who drove a punto where it was p*ssing out and they just thought it was an odd smell.
