Dealer Discount

Featured Replies

As mentioned in another thread I am looking to buy either a 1.2 TSI or 1.2 12v SE, and will be having a test drive this weekend.

I will be part exchanging my current car to help fund this purchase and wondered if I should expect the dealer to offer me any additional discount over and above the current vat free offer. I spoke briefly to the dealer last weekend and I got the impression that he would not be offering any further discounts.

I'm a little bit naive on this subject and don't know what is reasonable to expect.

Grateful for any advice you can give me.

i got a further 5% on top of the vat free deal.

they want your business so should be willing to give something extra.

i spoke to 2 dealers and played one off against the other for the best deal.

get your haggling head on

Check the best offers by internet brokers (start at Honest John which lists many of the best deals from these sites) and copy these off and take them with you. Dealers will often match these prices (like for like price - i.e. the broker is delivering to your door or ex a local dealer, and its a UK spec car with full warranty (most are)). Worked for me and there are some cheaper deals now than when I bought in June. If they won't match the price, why not use an internet broker and get a good deal?

I expect I'm being a bit dim with this. If I did use an on line broker would I still be able to part-exchange my car as part of the deal?

I didn't gat any extra discount on top of the VAT discount but we did get a few extras thrown in.

Get the very best deal you can BEFORE mentioning a P/X, then see what they will offer as you may get more elsewhere and they will almost certainly give less discount if they have to muck around with your car, too, unless it is a desirable motah!

go for 1.2 tsi 85 bhp /105 bhp a little bit more money and a bit better fuel econ the 1.2 12 valve is a 3 pot 70 bhp htp when i ordered my 1.2 tsi se the dealer would not offer any more discount but gave me more for my trade in

Everyone has their own way of trying to knock down the dealers.

When trading in I personally just ask them for a final figure. I dont care what they give me for my px. You can then haggle down from this final figure. Whether they do that by giving you more for your old car or knocking it off the new car is up to them. I dont get led in to discussions about what my old car is worth. Ultimately its how much of your hard earned cash they want to separate from you.

Last of all, when the dealer is close to tears about how much you knocked them down pause before signing the form........demand a full set of interior mats or any other extra goodiesof your choice. The hovering pen on the signature is a powerful tool.

Dont forget to claim back the road tax on your old car or have them knock that off the price.

As previoisly mentioned, play one dealer off against another. I never tell each dealer what the other is offering. Only that the best price wins. Be brave and say you are going away to talk to the other dealer and think about it. Leave your phone number.............

Not sure if any of that helps you. Its just how I do things and seems to give results

It's all about "price to change"

Or rather than being pushy and 'demanding' mats and what not, why not just make yourself as easy as possible to deal with and you'll probably find you'll get a good deal anyway.

People I like and get along with tend to get a good deal without even having to ask where as a person whom makes life difficult and is being pushy I'm much less likely to give a nice deal to straight away.

As wet-kipper says it's all about the cost to change. Find out how much the car you want is, do a little research on your car so you roughly know it's value. See what it comes to and make sure you are happy with the car and then decide what you'd be happy paying and just lay your cards out and make it clear that this is the figure I want to pay, is it possible?

Telling the dealers you are playing them off against each other probably isn't a good idea as we do speak to each and it doesn't really build any bridges. Obviously you can do what you wish but I wouldn't brag to the dealers that you are going to be comparing them to X down the road.

Oh, and go for the TSi it's great. I've got a TSi 85BHP SE you can have a go in if you like.

Thanks for everybody's advice.

A lot of food for thought!

I will see how I get on on Saturday re the test drive of the two engines, then decide how to proceed. I will try not to let the longer delivery times of the TSI engines affect my decision- as I'm quite an impatient person.

We have had Fabias for years. I am on my third (I do loads of miles). Great little car. You wont be dissapointed.

Hmmmmm................I'm beginning to wonder what group I've was put in as I've now bought 3 motors from you!! :giggle:

  • 3 weeks later...

After my usual 'investigative deliberations' including looking in on the helpful info. and debate on this site.....(thanks all for that).... I'm getting closer to ordering a Yeti.

It would be 1.2 DSG Muscovaco and either "SE" or "S" with optional reversing sensors. Options might just be limited to Light Assisant, Spare wheel and the 'Adventure Pack' (Mudflaps, Boot liner and rubber mats).

I fully understand that if I order before the end of November, the current price and VAT rate will be held.

I also see that a popular (and, I honestly believe, trustworthy) on line broker that is often refered to, will give a discount of £1986.80p on an SE with those options mentioned and I would be very willing to use them in the light of the experience of others as well as personal experience many years ago.

My local dealer has offered a 'small discount' and, because of the long delay my current PX was a difficult topic (which I understand) and I'd probably sell privately.

The broker supplied car would need to be either collected or dealer driven from "near the M25".... (200 + miles) and Allams is also 200+ miles from me.

I'd obviously prefer to buy locally and establish a pleasant relationship with the local dealer, but £1980 off list is not to be sniffed at and the local dealer would get servicing and any warranty work.

Dare I now ask the panel for their thoughts on all the above?

Would prefer honest, down to earth, answers even if I might not like them.... :-)

BTW....Delivery on the 1.2 DSG is expected to be 26 - 28 weeks ...ie. six or seven months.

Thanks in anticipation......

If it's who I think it is, the dealer will probably be Marlborough. I did a little research before I ordered for the best price, and went to a dealer recommended by a friend. They knocked a little off the already-discounted OTR price and I've got it for £12k OTR. I could have gotten it a little cheaper from the broker, but the price differential was not so significant that I would ditch a dealer who I know provides good, honest service.

However.... £2k less than your dealer is offering? Vote with your wallet mate.

Through my personal experiences I would agree with this. I have had eight cars from my local dealer over recent years and have an extremely positive relationship with the salesman and the dealer principal. This relationship ensures every time I walk in to buy a new model I am 100% confident I am getting the best deal I possible could. My latest purchase of a Fabia VRS resulted in a pleasing discount particularly considering what a new model it is.
