If you lift up the flap/draw in the glove box you should find the owners manual as well as your service book. In that manual you find what all of these things do. If you don't have one then you can download it in PDF form from one of the sticky threads.

BTW, Welcome to Briskoda. :)

No it isn't - the AC is directed into the glovebox by rotating the outlet IN the glovebox. The "On" pull in the right hand cubby box turns that into a fridge too! They're independent of each other but both only work when the AC itself is turned on in the cabin.

Although the one by the drivers side is the same temp. as the heating, whereas the main glovebox is always cold (I think!).

You could be right mate.

Manual excerpts which suggests not but I'm not really sure...:

Cooling of storage compartment on front passenger side

The storage compartment is for vehicles fitted with an air-conditioning system with a closable inlet for cooled air. You can switch the cooling system on or off using the control dial. Opening the air inlet when the air conditioning system is on causes fresh or interior air to flow into the storage compartment. The storage compartment is only cooled in the cooling mode. We recommend that you switch off the cooling (opening concealed) if it is operating in the heating mode or if you are not using the cooling system for the storage compartment.

Storage compartments on the driver's side

The lockable storage compartment is opened by folding down the cover in the direction of arrow. Storage compartment is for vehicles fitted with an air conditioning system with a closable inlet for thermally prepared air. The air supply in the storage compartment is regulated through the pull out cap. Pulling out the end cover in the direction of travel causes the air inlet to open while pushing it in causes the air inlet to close. At open air supply, air flows into the storage with a temperature which is as high as the one out of the air outlet nozzles, depending on temperature setting. The air inlet in the storage compartment is connected to position [face level air symbol at this point] through adjustment of the control dial for air distribution. This position causes the maximum amount of air to flow into the storage compartment (depending on the rotary regulator position for the fan). You can use the storage compartment, for example, to temper drinks cans, etc. If you do not use the air inlet in the storage compartment, the end cover should always be kept closed. There is a holder for a pen on the outside of the storage compartment

He is, They are independent from one another but both compartments

can be chilled or not chilled as desired

If SWMBO has been driving it, you'll have to remove hair brushes, make up, sat nav (not used), books, CDs, receipts from Next, tissues, sweets, diary, gloves, scarfs, headache pills. etc etc before you can find the lower compartment of the glove box. Be warned, if you ever take all these things out, you'll find that there is no way that they'll all go back in.
