excitable abs

Featured Replies

hi all, ive got a problem and you are the guys to help!

my fabby (52 plate comfort) has got very excitable abs....in other words slow or high speed, hard or light the abs kicks in, no fault codes stored, only thing i can see wrong is previos owner has at sometime had the rear caliper carriers heated to remove the allen bolts?? could this be it? ive checked the abs sensors are all reading which they are so HELP!!!

I've seen this on other cars where the sensor rings were mounted on the driveshafts, the shaft under the ring corrodes a bit and splits the sensor ring, the sensor reads the larger gap in the ring as a wheel lock up and the ABS cuts in.

It could be a front wheel bearing problem as the sensor ring is part of it. Some live data readings of wheel speeds at the point where the ABS plays up should point you in the right direction.

Yes, I agree with that and the live readings will help this diagnosis.

Based on the rear brake / heat and bolt removal I think you will find the rear WSS pickup is distorted or loose. If this vehicle uses the separate, pickup ring on the back of the rotor like our Mk3/B4 (Golf/Jetta/Passat) vehicles, they were noted for slipping and sticking to the WSS sensor after rear brake work.
