sump plugs

Featured Replies

hello

set out to chnge the oil on the 1.4 mi.

Ordered a new sump plug and washer... 19mm six sided ytpe - grey colour quite a long shank - approx 12 an inch.

Crawl under car and am confronted by different sump plug to tmy new one. rounded head with a hex insert for cooresponding allen key.

Now, are these 2 plugs interchangable, ie can i take the current one out and replace it with the new one,

or do i jusnt need to get a new washer for the one thats already fitted.

From what ive already read it would appear the 6 sided 'bolt' seems to be the norm, but im assuming not everyones driving a 1.4 mpi

If i can keep the existing plus and swap the washer, great - anyone know what size washer i need before i start!!!

cheers

Neil

When the Wife had a 1.4 mpi I only changed the copper sealing washer and not the complete plug. When I bought the filter at a Skoda dealer I asked for the plug, but the service guy said just change the washer.

you positive you were looking at the sump or were you looking at the gearbox sump plug?

I think the mpi sump plug uses a 6mm allen key and the plug is located at the back of the sump.

Farly confident it was the sump. Looks similar to the one under my Volvo - slightly bulbous drain plug at the lowest point.

Gearboxes after a certain date do not have a drain plug. My 2002 model has no drain plug.

I was also told at a Skoda dealer they never use the engine sump plugs so just went with the washer. Just be sure not to overtighten it and you should be OK.

Sounds like the one on my Fabia VRS.

Suggest compare copper washer if the same just swap them over.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

the 1.4mpi has a different sump plug (you only normally replace the seal on that engine) to most of the other engines, the one you have purchased will fit all models other then 1.2 and 1.4 mpi, the person selling them should have told you that.

Well thanks everyone for clarifying that.

I'll swing by a dealer next week and pick up a couple.

Looks like you have two washers on there, surprised its not leaking.

Those 19mm bungs should be replaced. The 1.2 and 1.4 MPI have bungs which are reusable and require a copper washer.

Yes it does look like two washers, but only a copper one is fitted.

Base of sump plug design only looks the shape of a washer, from the outside.

I think it's shaped possibly is to have a better fit onto the copper washer.?emoticon-0105-wink.gif
