Bloody Internet!

Featured Replies

Right...

I've now reached the limit of my technical knowledge and I'm loathed to phone up the talktalk helpline (was on Tiscali when originally got internet).

Basically, the bloody net keeps stopping, but it's ok again if I restart the router (Belkin ADSL2+).

This is work for an hour, two hours, maybe even ten hours before it needs restarting again.

All the router config is fine, all PC config is fine (it disconnects completely from internet, not just the PC so xbox, ps3 etc. all lose internet).

It's now doing my head in.

Any ideas?

Have you replaced your ADSL filter? Its the cheapest thing to replace so is easy to rule out.

Then can you gain access to a known working router to try and rule that out as well?

You also want to try plugging in to a different wall socket, preferably the main one.

On a different filter, same thing.

I've yet to try a different router - no one I know round here remembers their settings for my to put back after.

As for wall socket, I only have the one (one bed flat).

Thanks though. I'll try and get another router to fiddle with...

I am in similar boat.

Internet loses sync / or occasionally causes router to completely reboot.

Even now my 12meg line is sync'd at around 2, and it can barely hold onto that.

Have now tried - 3x routers , new filters, new adsl cables , BT engineer round to check house from main socket ( which he replaced for a newer type ) all the way back to the exchange. He reports no issues.

Have also done the 24hr test with router into test socket with nothing else connected. The only thing to come out of that was that the ISP said the report indicated some "quiet noise" (?) on the quiet line test. The BT eng done that whilst here and said was ok. I also did one and could not hear any noise.

Sorry to hichjack the thread a little OP, but a little unsure what the next step is.

Any ideas folks?

Have you made sure that you have unplugged everything else from the phone line except the router.

You need to try and get your ISP to perform a whoosh test, its a quick automated test that will check the quality and performance of the line and in most cases with highlight any faults. Although they are not always conclusive.

The ISP should also be able to tell you if the disconnections are user requested which means your router has caused the disconnection, either by loss of power or a dodgy connection.

You can also end up with stale sessions on the line, to resolve that you need to make sure leave you router off for at least 15 minutes to ensure the previous connection times out.

So you only have 1 socket and unable to change the router, you can change the RJ11 lead and the filter to rule them out, make sure the filter plugs into the socket first then anything else into the filter phone outlet.

The next thing to do is ask TalkTalk to send you a new router and if that doesn't solve the problem ask for a Broadband engineer visit.

Is the line noisy on phone calls, if it is report it as a phone fault to Talk Talk.

You haven't used up all your internets for the month, have you? Even though PlusNet didn't realise / wouldn't admit my problems were down to being on a legacy package that had had the allowance raised and dropped more often than Traci Lords's drawers, it 'disappeared' when a new month came around and the allowance was reset. I'm on a new package, but despite suggesting it to their tech ssupport half a dozen times, they still treated it as a hardware / line fault...

Just a thought!

That would not cause the router to loose synch.

Maybe not, but it turned out to be the the problem rather than line quality / 21CN compatibility / firewall issues and all the other stuff that tech support thought was the problem...

It's been fine since original post now, except for a mahoosive slow down last night.

I'm going to assume they were playing with the exchange. Apparently ours is qualifying for the BT fibre testbed rollout.

You lose internet, but do you lose local network?

Nope, local network remains (i.e. xbox and media streamer can still access PC).

You need to eliminate as much as possible form the possible causes.

Couple of things to try;

Get your ISP to do a line test.

Try replacing the cable between the router and the filter, unlikely but possible.

Remove everything from the router apart from the pc, including wireless connections.

Then test your connection and see if anything still happens.

On one hand it sounds like it could be a router (restarting it causes it to come back on), but on the other hand it sounds like it could be the line (loss of internet but not network). It could be that one is affecting the other to cause the faults you are describing.

It could be work being done on the line, but your ISP should be able to tell you if this is the case.

You need to try a different router to eliminate it from the possible causes.

Hope this helps

Is there bigger green cabinets going up in your area?

Turns out my similar issue may well lie with the exchange.

I am getting a lift & shift \ tie pair re-termination done tomorrow. Hope that solves it.

In other words they are changing your broadband port.

seems so.

Port change / Tie pair re term did not fix issue...:(
