I've changed the dipped bulbs and now the drivers sidelight doesn't work. To change it, do you have to remove the headlight (and therefore the front bumper!), as it says in the Haynes Manual??

No - and I'd have thought there was more room on the drivers side to get in that the passenger side. I've pointed another thread recently re the spring found behind the light which just seems to serve to get in the way - if you haven't already tried unclipping it, I suggest you start there.
