Is This the DPF Regen in Operation?

Featured Replies

Afternoon,

Proud owner of Octy Scout 2.0 TDi PD bought new in July. Car has done just shy of 3k.

On several occasions, after parking up, I notice a strong burning smell coming from just in front of rear wheel on drivers side, there does not appear to be any smoke, and no warning lights on the dash and the car runs normal.

Car does mainly long journeys and I use Shell diesel (only because it is the cheapest for miles). Is this burning smell due to DPF regen?

Many thanks.

I get that smell on mine - I think it is just the 'newness' of the components bedding in. There is iirc a diesel cooler under there which does the fuel return to the tank.

ive had my 2.0Pd TDI for around six month's, and have 22k on the clock, never noticed a smell or anything.

same here, no smells whatsoever, nearly 10K on the clock!

I had a burning smell coming from mine (petrol vRS) at the weekend. Definitely from the car somewhere as smelt it when parked in two different places.

Was after a very quick run round the M25 (unusual I know!) to get my daughter to swimming on time.

No warning lights. Driving fine. Car has done roughly 3.5 k miles. Haven't smelt it before or since. Weird.

Anyone have any ideas?

I had an issue with one of my brake pads (rear left) just skimming the disc, resulted in a hot smell (and radiating disc) and eventually I got a TPM warning, but by the time I got it to the garage it had sorted itself. They could tell what it was through due to the discolouration of the disc caused by excessive heat.

Good clue of a regen when parked up: fans are still going and smell coming from exhaust

That's a DPF regen ;)

Next time you get the smell, walk round the car and touch each wheel. If one wheel is hotter than the others then you have a sticking brake calliper or a pad rubbing on the disk.

I had a 1.9tdi Roomster courtesy car recently for a week or so and that did two noticeable regens in the short period I had it, both while I was driving in town. When I parked up and got out it stank of burning, so most likely that is what you're experiencing. However in 21k miles of driving my 2.0CR I've never noticed it doing a regen or smelled anything.

Unless you have asbestos fingers it might be an idea to put the back of your hand close to the wheel first to feel for the heat! If the brake is binding hard the wheel can get hot enough to burn your fingers!

Guess who found out the hard way :(

If it's that hot, you should just be able to feel it without touching.

Hope the OP benefits from all these replies. If I smell it again on mine (petrol), I'll certainly be checking the warmth of the wheels and colouration of the discs.

Thanks guys!

Sorry for the double post. Muppetry!

Thanks for all the responses, and apologies for not acknowledging sooner, but I originally posted this in the 'Ask a Tech' section which still indicates no responses!!!

I have not noticed the burning smell again, so it may well have been down to it being 'factory fresh'.

Once again, many thanks to all who responded.
