Power connection to Car Kit

Featured Replies

Hi there guys - first post from me.

I've just got my new Fabia Elegance Estate, and need to refit my Nokia CARK91. Have done this before so not expecting any great problems. After reading through the archive I see that it's easy to get access to the panel by taking out the passenger side glove box. One thing that puzzles me though - the general advice seems to be to get a power connection by patching into the radio head connector. Yet the Fabia handbook p.115 says there is a power socket for a phone "under the front passenger storage conpartment".

Does anyone know if this actually exists?

Thanks!

Sal

Sorry can't answer this one myself but I'll be having a Furby vRS sometime soon and I'll be needed the same kinda thing so very interested in the response too :)

No reply, so I took the passenger box out anyway (very easy as previously stated). But no spare 12v connection for a phone that I can see.

There must be a point somewhere because there is a 5amp fuse dedicated to a phone. If no-one can point me to it I will have to patch in to the radio connector anyway.

Just making up a mounting bracket for the phone now, to avoid damaging the dashboard too much.

Might be worth ringing up a local Tandy (or similar) store, perhaps they can help you?

If you do happen to find where it is, any chance of some pics :D

Bearing in mind it's a continental car, could it possibly under the drivers side. Never know do you?

I don't think so. All the other wiring is swapped over for RHD, so this would be as well. The only connectors under the passenger storage are to the passenger airbag and the ventilation fan, and these are both reyersed from the LHD.

I'd like to trace the wire from the phone's fuse on the fusebox and see where it goes to, but it doesn't look easy to get the fuse board far enough out to see behind.

If I can find something worth a picture I'll certainly post it.

might be better to ask either your dealer or local car audio installer. they might help you

I asked the dealer. Answer was "Oh no we can't tell you that - much too difficult for you to fit - invalidates the warranty - might get your pretty little hands dirty - etc etc." In other words they want lots of notes for doing it themselves.

I don't know any local audio installer but surely they wouldn't help and lose the business?

You should look at Dashmount, they make brackets that fit behind the climate/heater controls and look very neat and tidy.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have already made a bracket that fits in the gap down the side of radio/storage tray. For those who don't know, the vertical trim strips either side of the radio just clip in and out.

My only problem is finding a way of connecting the 12v lead to the "phone" fuse (fuse 18) rather than patch at into the radio circuit. A connection to the radio will work of course, but I just like to do these things properly :)

I'd have a look in our car but it won't arrive till mid-March soz :(

As you say the dealer won't be too keen to help as they'll want to make some cash (which I must admit I can understand in principle).

If there is a Hayes manual for the Furby it may show it, but you can't be sure I suppose :(

sallyann - dont know if you've worked round this yet but try PM'ing Ross Clarke he works for Skoda and what he doesnt know about the Fabia isnt worth knowing.

dunno about the local audio type bloke, my local shop is awesome. not the cheapest but give me disounts on everything now aswell helping me out and giving me all the advice they can. most of these places can be very helpfull. good bit of advice about asking ross. i'll ask down my local shop tomorrow and report any findings

just gave one of em a ring and he said they always tap into either the stereo feed or wire back to the fuse depending how hard it is. that connections is for a factory phone kit that will come with its own loom and he don't know exactly where that is as he has never fitted one. so sounds like you'll be best to either do the norm and tap into the stereo or if possible wire back to the small fuse board.

hope this helps

Yes thanks Bengie. I'm just not sure how to get at the back of the fuse unit. It will have to wait until the weekend before I can have another go at it and will then report back.

Incidentally I hadn't got a removal tool for the radio but found it easy with a couple of strips cut off an old hose clamp - just the shape and stiffness (as the actress said to the bishop).

Thanks guys for your help.

cheers , steve.

Sure thing - I'll post a pic shortly

Here's the tool I made - only took a few minutes.

I had an old worm drive hose clip that had about three of inches of plain flat steel, not 'threaded'. It was just the right thickness to go through the slots, but too wide. So after chopping off the length I wanted, I just cut it down the middle to make two pieces of the right width. The curly 'handles' are not really necessary as no great force is required to push them into the radio, but is does make them easier to find in the toolbox!

If you have a shorter clip that doesn't have an 'unthreaded' section, a threaded bit would probably be just as good providing it's not too thick.

Hope the pic is OK.

It seems you will also be looking for a 12v connection. Let me know if you find one before the weekend!

nice one sallyann,

will have a look for summat similar in me 'odds and sods' basket !

no time to hunt around for 12v supply just yet , may have to wait for a week or so 'til i get someone with a bit of know-how with me for moral support.

keep us all posted tho if you find an "easy" way of doing it,

cheers,

steve.

Have taken the easy path and picked 12v off the radio supply - through an in-line fuse for safety.

The Fabia is quite an easy car to work on - panels come off nice and easy and there is plenty of room to work. So far, no rattles after reassembly.

Good luck with your new motor

Sal

If I do get round to fiddling with the electrics in mine when it arrives I'll get some snaps done for it, hope it's ok :D

Yes thanks Bengie. I'm just not sure how to get at the back of the fuse unit.

I had a detector on my dash and had to run a cable, past the fusebox, down to the ciggy lighter. How much more simple to go straight into the fusebox. I hope to get an OriginB2 Solo soon and will try wiring into a fuse - i.e. solder or bind a wire onto the downstream side of it. I would be interested to know what you did.

Well, I got a little saw (as the actress said to the bishop). A junior hacksaw blade with the teeth ground down and a notch in the end slips in nicely (atasttb). I borrowed the dealers key, laid a piece of paper over and rubbed the profile (atasttb) from which I produced a line drawing. The hole in the middle is not necessary, by the way.
