What tyre sizes are allowed?

Featured Replies

Hi,

We recieved our new scout 1.8 TSi a couple of weeks ago and i'm looking into the winter tyre size options. The handbook refers to the literature you received with the car to obtain the required data, what other document would have this detail other than the handbook?

The sticker on the inside of the fuel flap states two sizes, 225/50/17 and 205/55/16. There is no indication of the load or speed index. The handbook states a maximum load for each axle, with the rear axle stated as 1230kg. If that is halved then each tyre needs to have a load rating of 615kg which is a 91. The car was supplied with 225/50/17 tyres with a speed rating of W and a load index 94 (670kg). I am trying to determine if at is possible to fit a set of 16" wheels fitted with 205/55/16 91H. The handbook states that winter tyres of a lower speed rating can be fitted as long as you don't exceed the maximum for that tyre. Any help on the load index is appreciated or is it better to contact my Skoda dealer for advice?

Cheers.

Hi, I'm in just the same position as you. Picked my Scout up a month ago (which I am very pleased with). I want to fit winter tyres and conclude the 205/55/16 are the best option. I intend fitting then to steel rims which I will get from the dealer (working out off sets, stud patterns and such like is too confusing for me). Tyrewise the dealer suggested I stick with load index the car was supplied with (94).The cost between that and the 91 doesn't seem too heavy.

I also noticed the Scout's spare tyre (supplied as an extra) is 205/55/16 which I guess will work better with the winter tyre size. I had a job getting my head round how a smaller tyre to the fitted ones would work as a spare but the dealer assured me it would, but said when used change it back as soon as you can.

Regarding winter tyre choices the forums have a bewildering choice. I am coming down to either the Nokian WRG2 or Dunlop sp winter sport 3D (both seem well thought of but the Dunlop apears to have better reviews as an all rounder but is a fair bit dearer)

All the best.

awaiting delivery of my scout in the next couple of weeks and have a set of 16" skoda alloys and nokian wr g2 m&s 96H xl tyres ready to fit . after a few mins search i have gone for 205/60/16 as the scout runs 50 profile 17" wheels(over the 45 profile on the l&k) to give it 1" more ground clearance i.e a 225/50/17 axle hieght is 65.7 cm and the 205/55/16 only has an axle hieght of 63.2 cm but the 205/60/16 keeps the hieht better at 65.2 cm .bit long winded i know but speedo will be 3.9% out with the 205/55/16 but only 0.7% out with the 205/60/16

I see where your coming from with the 205/60/16 but as that is not a tyre size recommended by Skoda for the Octavia I would be unsure of an insurance companies position in the event of a claim. There seems to be a few threads on winter tyres and insurers with no clear and concise position established. I have spoken to my current insurers Tesco and they deem the fitting of different sized wheels with winter tyres as a modifcation and want an extra £40. The underwriters also asked if they would be professionaly fitted which I presume was to find out if I would be swapping the wheels over myself or not.

I've narrowed my choice down to either Marangoni Meteor HP's at £60 or Nokian WR G2's at £80 each, both are 205/55/16 94H.
