high frequency juddering

Featured Replies

right a few months ago my felicia estate started showing symptoms of having an out of balance wheel, juddering etc. however i have just had 2 new tyres fitted on the front and the problem is still there, accererating is fine as is constant speeds, however lifting off the throttle at motorway speeds 70 / 80 the whole car vibrates very violently. i am wondering about the bushes in the steering system but there does not seem to be any play and the car has only just had an mot. the car has 70000 miles on the clock 60000 of those in the last 2 years, i spose i do drive the cat quite hard if this helps diagnosing.

glad to hear it's driven hard

you've probably lost the vibration damper off the drivers side driveshaft or maybe it's loose

sounds to me like the wheels are not balanced, i cant go over 55 without the car shaking a lot if i dont balance the wheels

I had similar symptoms - slight judder noticeable above 40, severe at 60-65 (I could look at the wheel and see my hand double, about half an inch apart :)) The main difference was mine was worse with the throttle on, and about half as harsh when lifting off. New rubbers on the vibration damper (it was loose enough to spin round on the driveshaft) made no difference, but I've just had new tyres on the front and now it's gone completely.

Given that as you say it sounds like a wheel balance issue, and the throttle on/off response is opposite to what I had, I'd start to suspect your rear wheel(s) as the most likely culprit, if the driveshaft damper doesn't solve it - I'd check that first as it's so easily done (I even changed mine without jacking the car up!)

Hi

I had this problem with my car and it turned out to be a buckled front wheel. It was re-balanced and put on the back. Since then no further problem.

ok thanks guys, ive checked the vibration damper and it seems fine, the front wheels have brand new firestone tires and are ballanced. il get the rears done nxt week sometime, but il be suprised if thats it, it feels to me like its drivetrain related, possibly a worn bearing somewhere along the line?
