WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT?!

Featured Replies

Can anyone out there tell me why when I have new tyres fitted , the fitter never inflates them to anything like the correct pressure?

Had two new tyres fitted to the front of my VRS on Friday, when I checked the pressures at home ( cold ) , one was 35 psi, and the other 47 psi , they should both be 32.

It then stuck me that in 35 years of owning cars, and buying maybe, many ,many dozens of new tyres over this time I cannot recall one single occasion when the pressure has been correct.......Or is it just me!!

no it's not just you.

mainly the reason is because they don't give a ****

my thoughts are they do this as many won't check for several k, leading to uneven wear so they can flogging you a new set sooner.

and of course if they did the alignment like that then you'd be going sideways half the time.

I check them with my digital sensor before I leave because as you say they are way out, and those on the pump are not accurate

I always ask them to inflate to my desired pressure (34psi for the vRS)

I have never had tyres come out at odd pressures but then I generally try and use the same fitter all the time so they know me and I also watch them like a hawk :giggle:

And is not only in the UK....

When I got my winter tyres fitted I asked them to inflate them to 36psi. Did they do it? Did they 'eck. 32psi is what they put in. But then, what do I know. :dull:

That is the reason I joined Briskoda, so that I can share experiences with fellow Skoda owners and have bases to pick a fight with the dealer or the guys over at the garage. :punch:emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Nope. Never had new tyres inflated to a decent pressure

you would think it a fairly basic skill but I never trust anybody else to get it right.... way way back in the dim distant past when I learned to drive I was also shown how to do those basic checks and still think tyre pressure best checked cold at home... the pressures indicated are always cold, the pressures would read higher after car had been driven and tyres heat up...and please don't mock me for this but I still inflate if necessary with a foot pump because I don't trust any of those auto shut off sensing electrical things to get it right either. However I do agree that it is frustrating that tyre fitters so often don't seem to bother.

Half the trouble is that every gauge you try seems to read different! I use a Halfords inflator with a gauge but always use my trusty chrome "pencil" gauge afterwards - which for all I know could be miles out, but I don't think so.

Weirdest thing I ever came across, several years ago in the USA, I checked the rental car on a service station pump which ONLY produced 35 psi. Regardless of the vehicle, you just had to put air in till it stopped pumping, and that was at 35 only. Still as it happens it was near enough for jazz, and not my car so W T H

last time I had new tyres fitted on the fabia they put the pressure at 50+ all round. Didn't pick it up straight away it was only after nearly ending up in a ditch after following someone in a van and fighting to keep up that I actually checked the pressure! I was shocked! Next time I will check, but to answer the question no I dont know why it is such a difficult thing to do!

ive just recently had 2 front tyres fitted (contisport3s), i watched fitter like a hawk told him not to jack on sills etc, anyway while he was putting tyre on rim i asked him to put 33psi in both tyres. guess what 34 one side 38 the other, almost felt like a crime letting 5 psi of pure nitrogen into the atmosphere, the other thing i always check is how tight they have done your wheel nuts, almost always they are over tightened.

i normally back them off one at a time and torque them up to proper settings!
