Network using power cables

Featured Replies

Was in PC world today. Thye had a system to allow PCs in a house to be networked using devices that plug into the mains and somehow use the power wiring in the house to transmit computer data. As I have severe doubts about wireless, and no desire to start wiring my house up with network cabling, would this be a good solution, or is there some major problem with this concept?

I've seen it before but never used it myself.

Although I do think it's rather slow. Probably ok for broadband sharing but not for moving files between PCs.

Don't do it.

It's expensive , unreliable and slow.

Either run a few lengths of proper CAT5 networking cable , or buy some wireless kit.

It's not something I've tried William, but I have read some excellent reviews of this kind of kit. Very flexible and easy to set-up -I guess it would be relatively more expensive than a standard solution though but much more secure than wireless.

Are these those HomePlug things? Think they work out at about

PLUS do you really want to be plugging your PC's network card into the mains...?

Go for wireless. Easier to add more devices into the mix at a later date (stream MP3s to your hifi, or if you get a laptop) and you're not introducing RF into your mains - which could well interfere with other ligitimate radio users (any radio hams near you will probably be annoyed, for example)...
