Blanked EGR and more overboosts/limp homes

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I blanked off my EGR pipework a while ago, and also disconnected the vacuum controller bit for the spring plunger on the EGR/ant-shudder valve pipework. Since then I have noticed my car seems to overboost a lot more than it did previously. :'(

I used to get a couple of overboosts per 60 mile drive to or from work, but the other day I probably had 6 or 7 of them - sometimes I could feel the car backing off in power so stopped accelerating to "prevent" it from occuring.

Is there any reason why blanking off the EGR should cause it to get worse, or is it simply that the vanes in the turbo are in desperate need of cleaning? On that point, what gasket do I need to source from a dealer - a few part numbers would be handy? I already have a spare oil supply pipe, as I have been told they some times break. I am feeling I need to tackle this pretty soon!

Thanks,

Matt

When I blanked the EGR I also adapted the EGR duty cycle as described in special adaptions here http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/tdi.html, but I think you need to solve your sticky vane problem.

I see you are now on the slippery slope where you back off the power to prevent limp mode and in doing so make the vanes stick more. How long have you had this problem :)

I have had this problem far toooooo long. However a waterproof and well insulated house fall higher on my list of things to fix. I am however pleased to say I am just about to finish off putting up over £500 of celotex, so I think the car is next on the list.

I guess the hardest bit is getting the turbo off! I assume if I pop into the dealer and ask for the gaskets for the turbo they will know which two I need?!

you said you removed the vac for the anti shudder valve? did you jam the flap open somehow? (like a cable tie etc, ofrleave the vac actuator connected to it?).

I saw a car at work that had the actuator missing and the flap would randomly close and cause loss of power and smoke.

otherwise cant see why blanking the egr off would increase any overboost except maybe before it was bleeding exh gas all the time so now you have more going into the turbo maybe

get it fixed anyway its not difficult usually to do the turbo

I meant I blanked off the vacuum which controls going to the how much exhaust gas is let back into the the system (the springy plunger thing). The anti-shudder is still there, and "plumbed" in as normal.

Turbo is next on my list of things do.... honest
