1st service and Missing Gears

Featured Replies

Hi all,

A wee bit of advice, the car is going in for its first service (14 months old and only 10,800 miles, 170cr diesel Elegance) at the end of the week. Any items that I should be aware off, should I switch to varible servicing or keep fixed, iam being given the option.

When swtiching to 2nd gear it sometimes sticks and wont go in to gear, or enters with the dreaded cruch. It is worse when cold. If I am doing the right speed it enters ok or if I double cutch its ok, nybody any ideas what or how I should report it or what may be worng

I assumed they were setup for variable servicing from delivery, have you chosen to take it in on a fixed service interval?

Best regards

David

Upon booking car in there were usure if the car was fixed or varible and they asked what I would like the car set up as? They even suggested that I dont have to service it at this point. As I dont do a lot of miles I went for fixed

Well the car had the service and the gears were checked and for ok.

I still have the problem with the gear, the bitting point is hard to the floor, and it will also not select 1 or more of the gears smoothly. I have it back at 2 separate dealers, both said it was ok, but still giving me issues.

I took it back to my local dealer again and ask for a "gearbox expert" to come for a drive with me and thank god I did. The expert agreed with me and the car is now book in for a gearbox check, they are still unsure what is wrong but the dealer has advise it may be one of the following:

1) wrong oil been installed at factory

2) mesh ring damage

3) major gearbox rebuild

So the moral is if any of you have cars that do not select gears smoothly get the dealer to come and see for them selves

Sorry to read of your gearbox woes. I would be haapier if you got a complete unit rather than messing around with the internals.

With regards to your first service, my supplying dealer quite correctly put my car onto fixed servicing at delivery due to my usage involving mainly short journeys. When I put my car in for its first service it was more convenient for me to use another dealer and they put in PD oil which is not suitable for the common rail engine!! just because that is what they assumed all cars on fixed servicing used. Skoda UK were contacted by me and they had to change it the next day for long life oil!!.

I wonder how many cars in Fife are looking at DPF failure due to these idiots!!

G.K.

I am not surprised that you state that it was a fife dealership that put the wrong oil in, was it in hilbeath dumfermline. Against my better judgement went there last year for my car as I was getting a better deal than Bannockburn Stirling, but it was the Dumferline dealership that wrongly checked the gearbox.

Newmarkert in Bannockburn missed the issue during service, but they did ake me to follow up if there was still an issue. When I took my car back to Newmarkert they were excellent in providing a mahanic for a road test. Afterwards the workshop supervisor took time with me to explain, in depth, what would be happening next. He made it clear that a full dianostis coudl not be made until the gearbox drained and it any metal found then removed from the car. I have been yet again impressed with Newmarkert Bannockburn and have been for the last 9 years. Should have never had left to go to Halbeath. So if anybody in the central belt of Scotland looking for a Skoda, the give newmarkert a call.

I will let you know how I get on the car is book in on the 22nd for the repair.

Can anybody advise how I stand legally if a fault is found inside the gearbox, are Skoda legally boound to replace or repair, the car is 16 months old with 11,000 miles on the clock so the gearbox is just settling in.

regards

Yes it was Halbeath. I my opinion if they cannot do an oil change properly , how could they manage to repair a gearbox??

I think that the simple approach regarding an oil check is the best way forward. I suspect that gearbox stripdowns are few and far between these days because all these guys are just fitters and they would prefer to fit an exchange unit. (I am sure you would prefer that also!!)

Good luck.

GK and all

I would also prefer a new box, but my local dealer is one of the now rare dealers, with the old fashion "skilled traderman".

I have spoken to the guy whon will be doing the repair (yip i seen the man, dealer does care) and I have faith in him, would still have prefer a new box. I have phone Skoda Uk, only to be told as it is a warrently it would be the most cost efficent (cheapest) wel he is hoping that a lot of gears are damage and they just fit a new box.

I will let you know how i get on

Looks like the best way forward for you. Confidence in the workshop is a great thing and it is assuring that the dealer is on your side and has respect for you and your car. These guys see our cherished motors , which are bought with our hard earned cash as just units on a sales sheet and these "units" are just driven around by idiots who have no mechanical knowledge whatsoever. most folk unfortunatly just want to hand over the keys and assume that it will be "fixed" .

It must be seriously irritating for these mechanics to have customers who have a little knowledge (and read this forum) because they could on some occasions be a litlle more honest and respectful to the people who keep them in a job.
