From having seen mine in bits recently, it looks like the gearbox also forms the engine mount too, so I suposed unbolt the box from the engine vs unbolt from chassis. My question would be: is the "new" box better than the "old" one?

ok, it depends on how you are working on it.. normally if you are on a 2 post lift you would drop the entire engine/gearbox assembly out as a whole from the bottom (it wont come out the top easily).. however if you are working on you driveway on axle stands it's easier to drop the engine and gearbox to the floor, then seperate them, then lift the engine out the top... you don't need to remove the drivesahafts from the gearbox if you do it like this as well which will save you a few quid on draining and refiling the gear oil..

it is possible to remove the engine and leave the gearbox in place but it is really really difficult because there's not much clearance to play with on the drivers side chassis rail.. also i would advise you to remove the alternator too to avoid damaging the radiator

nice one guys. took altenator and power steerin pump off, dropped both engine and gearbox seperated them and just got the new engine runnin today just as u said teflontom.

now just 4 a few teething problems. ie 1. fan belt tensioner is funny as the belt is not right?? its as if its an inch too short and the tensioner is crooked

2. think the distributor cap needs adjusted cos shes a bit missy / growlly.

need to go search 4 threads for these problems but...

any tips or solutions on these issues would be welcome ;) thanks again men

Do you know if the donor engine is from a vehicle with similar spec to your pickup? For the 1.6 alone there are 2 different types of alternator mounting bracket/tensioner and 4 different belt lengths depending on whether PAS and/or aircon were fitted. There's certainly potential for a mixup there.

3 types :p

1. no air or pas (uses a spring under the alternator for tensioning)

2. pas

3. pas and aircon

a picture well tell a thousand words here if you have a digital camera?

there is a method for properly adjusting the ignition timing but you need access to vag-com to do it

 In my defence, I was thinking in terms of tensioners, and the latter two do both use the same eccentric sprung idler, don't they? Can I still pretend I was right? :D
