Why do people bother with sidelights?

Today is quite foggy on the Yorkshire coast, don't know what it was like where you are. Visibility about 100m in places.

On the way to Scarborough, and then to Bridlington and back I would say the following proportions applied

60% with headlights

20% with sidelights only

5% sidelights and front fogs

15% no lights at all.

reason for edit: fat fingers/speeling error

Clear, getting light here. Sidelights were probably adequate, if you trusted everyone coming the other way to actually observe properly.

My 2p now is that DRL's are great, I retrofitted them on as non chavveh as possible, reasoning is so that people are more likely to see me in the daytime. Sidelights are for when your parked or when one of your dipped has blown so people can differentiate you from a motocyclist.

What did you fit and whereabout did you fit them? was going to do this but getting cold feet, not sure if it can be done non-chav.

(mines a furby btw) I put mine near the fog lights, set of 7 LEDs? So not too long so it doesn't look too xmas tree decor, imo its subtle enough. Get you a link later.

Alternatively people have been considering stealing the Furby II fogs as DRL's, but it replaces fogs for DRL's..

Its all about time and place.

If i've got sidelights on, then its more to put my rear lights on, than my fronts. For instance heavy spray on the motorway.

Let's hope you never get involved in a collision in those conditions then as you will be prosecuted. The law specifically states that in restricted visibility, ie.  rain and spray you MUST have your headlights on.

Your insurance may well be negated by non/miss use of lights appropriate for the conditions.
