There will be a VW approved number specified in the manual to use. Look out for oil bearing this number.

Here's some bedtime reading http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html

Recommended oil from Skoda VW 505.01 Fully Synthetic.

I have heard a replacement oil VW 507.00 can be used.

While I can still purchase VW 505.01 I shall continue using it. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

505.01 is for PD engines running on fixed service intervals, 506.01 is for PD engine on extended servicing (although the manual for my PD160 says to use 506.01 on a fixed service schedule). didn't 507.00 supersede 505.01 and 506.01?

I've currently got fully-synthetic in mine and plan on changing it at around 10,000 miles. don't know if it's simply down to being fresh oil rather than "better" oil but the car does seem to feel smoother and possibly a little stronger, particularly at lower engine speeds
