Asus 901 - keyboard remarkably resilient to tea

Featured Replies

Had a result last night - SWMBO was using one of our netbooks and managed to dump half a mug of cold tea in the keyboard. I quickly dried off as much as I could and then shut it down to try and dry the rest. Fired it up again and all was working except the keyboard which was totally random to any key presses and the display which had turned itself through 90 degrees (probably as a result of the dodgy keyboard).

Anyhow split the machine and removed the keyboard and found plenty of tea under the keyboard - dried that all out, put it back together and tried again - still no joy.

So, with nothing to lose I took the keyboard off, gave it a really good run under the cold tap, dried it off an popped it on the radiator overnight. Reassembled this morning and hey presto - working fine!

Anyhow as a result I'm going to try and find on of those silicon keyboard skins for it as a precautionary measure so wondered if anyone has any experience of them?

I also wondered if anyone had done a touch screen conversion on one to make it easier to use when slobbing on the sofa (limited space for a mouse and SWMBO doesn't get on with the trackpad)?

I've supplied loads of these in the past - http://www.inpace.com/keyboard_gloves.html

No problems what-so-ever, but they do wear out of a lot of usage (24x7) in a commerical environment.

Hope this helps in some little way...

BTW: If any one is interested I have a brand new Logitech Deluxe keyboard (PS/2) complete with new keyboard glove available for sale...

As long as you turn it off ASAP and swill out anything other than water, you stand a pretty good chance of getting it working again. When I was a field engineer, I used this method quite a lot. :)

I also once dumped a cup of water inside a Dell 610 laptop when I was running a training course. The candidates were treated to the sight of me pulling out the battery, ripping out the keyboard and swinging it wildly around my head for 10 minutes to centrifuge the water out. It worked a treat after that!
