Skoda Fabia choices

Featured Replies

I was recently thinking about the time back in March 2000 when I went to RK Oliver with the intention of changing my 1.3Gli Felicia Hatchback for a newly released Fabia (I ended up getting a new but Pre-reg Felicia estate instead). At that time the entry level car was a 1.0L Fabia Classic. What happened to the 1.0L engine? What power was it, and does anyone on here have experience of it? I know the next time I was looking to change the car niether the 1.0L or the 1.4 8V were options.

1.0L? I don't recall there ever being a 1.0L engine in it!

There was, I am 100% sure of this.

There was, It was used as the entry level 'buy the Fabia range starting from

sure the base model was 1.4 8v classic.can't remember 1.0

The power for the 1.0 was around 55bhp, with the 1.4 8V roughly 65bhp IIRC, the 1.2 FSi comes in 58 and 68bhp versions and as they use new technology are much nicer to kittens and all other things cute and cuddly with their less harmful emissions.

When the model was launched, yes. They then introduced the 1.0 as the base model only avaliable in classic trim. It did not last too long and is one of the mysteries of the Fabia range along with the semi-mythical 2.0l 115bhp engine seen in the elegance.

Probably the 1.0l unit from the Polo then?

Rob.

I think so, or it was a version of the 1.4 8v I have heard both in the past.

I think it is a shame that they dropped the 1.4 8v for the 1.2. The 1.4 8V was a proper Skoda engine (prob the last Skoda thing about Skoda's) and was in 1.3 MPI version in the Felicia a very very reliable unit and surprisingly pleasent to live with. Also a big big plus point was it had a timing chain instead of a belt.

I'll agree with you on the timing chain from a maintenance point of view, but I still had to change a few when I worked at a skoda dealer.

The 1.2 engine was the chief reason that my wife and I decided on the Micra as her new car rather than a Fabia Classic (much higher equipment level also played a part). The 1.2 unit just seemed weird and was very low powered for a 1.2. The 1.2 16V Nissan engine is 80bhp.

Wasn't the 1.2 originally designed by Skoda, and VW liked it so much that it helped swing them into the merge?

If so it took a heck of a while to appear. VW have been tied up with Skoda since the second version of the Favorit.

Yeah, well, it went into the Polo first I believe and did take a long time to get into the Fabia...not sure if it's true or not, was just something I'd read somewhere.

Could be. Just seems a strange engine to me. The 6V version we test drove was gutless. It was a shame because I really wanted to like the Fabia more than the Micra. If the engine had been better, the better build quality and room would have made up for the lack of kit for me (not so sure about SWMBO), but along with the lack of kit, and underpowered engine meant the Fabia Classic was no competition for the slightly cheaper Micra.

the old 1.4 8v we had sounded quite good and was a fine drive.the 1.2 courtesy car i tried went quite well but i thought it had one of the most embarrassing engine sounds i have heard(if it is possible to be embarrassed by an engine note).bit like a hairdryer.as for the 2.0 wasn't that the same engine that had difficulty pulling my mark 3 golf gti up the road?

VW commissioned Skoda to design the engine in 1998, using certain VW standard parts (pistons etc)

That's what I was thinking of...cheers!

I think I remember the 1.0 being an option when I got furby Mk1, back in June 01.

I also seem to remember that Y reg was the time the 1.9 TDI found its way into the Fabia too...? I couldn't imagine a 55hp engine in the Fabia. :( No offence to MPI owners, but the 64hp 1.4 isn't special in that body. However, an MPI is probably still quicker than the 1.2 6v polo I ran for my month "inbetween" furbies. :D

Isnt the old 1.0 engine a reworked 105 engine, that was also dumped in other VW family cars? I believe the same engine was offered in favorits in CZ as well,

the old 1.4 8v might not have had the oomph for a high speed fabia, but it makes a fine source of longstroke crank and rods for hot 136 engines :).

The Polo had a 1.0 litre engine well before they bought skoda , so I'd expect it to have been a development of that rather than an old skoda design

When VW took over skoda they made full use of skodas already techinically excellent engines, the rattly old 1300 got replaced with skodas 136 enlarged to 1400, I believe the same thing happened with the 105 engine, the engine was very cheap to produce, and made a decent amount of torque and power, I think this engine was originally fitted to fabias, and I believe the seat arossa, not sure what else will have to look it up.

Remember this is the same engine that in 1300 form was capable in the early 80's of walking the floor with Jags and BMWs in cicuit racing, and again in 1994 taking on the worlds best in rallying, against 300bhp turbo charged vehicles.
