Alloy Wheels

Featured Replies

I have had a look around the site and have not been able to find an answer, so apologies if this has been discussed before.

I have a shiney new VRS in anthracite on order (build week 50 emoticon-0106-crying.gif ) and have been looking at getting some different alloys.

I am a little confused when it comes to fitments. I have telephoned my dealer (DM Keiths - Wakefield) and they tell me that the standard 18" wheels on the VRS are

18/7.5J et51

The ones I am looking at are listed as

18x8 5/112 et38

I have seen the wheels listed on several web sites, some of the sites list this wheel has fitting the VRS and others list it as not been available - very confused!

My question is will they fit?

Many Thanks in advance

P

Check this site https://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp its excellent for wheel sizing, putting the details in you've given the inner clearance of the new wheel is the same but it will extend an extra 26mm further out, I'm not sure but I think they will foul the arch at that distance.

tbh I fitted 15mm spacers and I thought they stuck out to far as well, but its personal preference.

Think they'll be a little too wide for general use those, as they're 1/2" wider as well don't forget. I'm using a 8x18 ET42 without any issues - no problems on full lock or rubbing, if that helps at all.

Depends on which wheel make/model you're looking at of course, but are there any other offset/width options offered?

It's worth remembering that handling can be compromised if you move too far from the original offset...........and there is nothing that shouts "muppet" more than aftermarket wheels filling arches just that little bit too much. emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

I disagree.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder. some people like to individualise their cars and aftermarket wheels are a good way of doing this.

i have noticed several well respected members of this forum have wheel filling arches ! are they " muppets "

each to their own.

i for one have always had aftermarket wheels on my cars

If this means there's a spare Neptune wheel for sale, I'm in the market for one. Just really badly kerbed mine, not happy.

Using the link I got the inner clearance to be 7mm more and the outer position to be extended by 19mm- is extending the wheel out 19mm too much. How much 'space' is there?

I'm not sure if you have entered the correct values! On your original post you state (correctly) that the standard vRS wheel is 7.5J ET51 and the new ones you are considering to be an 8.5J ET38!? If you enter these figures in the calculator it gives the inner clearance the same but the outer clearance +26mm.

Personally I found a 15mm spacer to much, so I certainly wouldn't consider a wheel that extends 19mm further, having said that I did only fit spacers on the rear so maybe with the fronts matching it may of looked better. With regards the amount of space, I think you would get away with the 19mm extension, however if you alter the suspension you may have problems.

Hi Lee,

A slight misunderstanding here - my original post is probably not very clear the new wheel size is 18/8 and then hole spacing of 5/112 with a spacing of et38

The suspension is standard VRS, so slightly lower than normal. I have no intention of making it any lower - too many speed bumps and pot holes in Barnsley for that!

One other thing (now I might be considered thick at this point) if the new wheels are 1/2" wider, how will tyres of the same profile fit 225/40 18?

Arhhh, I see the confusion, I read the wheel width as 8.5J with a 112 PCD  The 225 tyres will fit that wheel but the wall will roll over a bit more, tbh you probably won't even notice the difference, if you were looking at a 8.5 or 9J then you would definately have to step up to a 235.

I have to say I agree with Mannyo's comment, I think you may still struggle for clearance even on a standard vRS with an extra 19mm width, and regarding not lowering it.....never say never! I dropped mine by 30mm and it looks sooooooooo much better.
