What happens if you run out of diesel?

And how accurate is the fabia's computer, I mean if it displays that I can drive for 50 miles, is there enough fuel to drive for this distance?

I remember one episode of Top Gear. Richard Hammond was driving VW Polo, its computer displayed 0 miles and he could drive a couple of miles more.

And my manual says the fuel tank is 45 literes but I top it up with 55 literes what is the real capacity, has anybody measured it?

Regards,

Simon

You stick more in :D

I've ran mine on 0 to go, for 30 miles and still got to a petrol station with the engine running

Then he had to drive further as he rememberd its a diesel :giggle:

I did 37 miles after the computer said 0 and it was still going fine. Although I have run out before and you just put some in and keep turning it over and eventually it will start again.

The car stops and you walk home or call the recovery services - haha

The TDi motor is self priming so it will sort it's self out after you put more fuel in.

You die and go to hell for your sins

The fuel tank will have a nominal capacity of 45 litres, however there is an expansion area at the top of the tank which is not counted in the capacity figures. What you are doing is the same as what I do and that is fill to the brim which also fills up this expansion area. No problem but just make sure you don't park up immediately after filling up like this or you may end up with a puddle under your car.

I know the pd130 cuts out 3 times before it's empty

I think the original questions stems from the knowledge that old diesel cars/vans never used to have a fuel priming pump. If you ran out of diesel 'in the oldern days' you were buggered because no matter how much re-fueling you did you could never get the engine started. You would need to manually pump the diesel into the engine which usually meant an expensive trip to a garage. (unless you knew or knew someone that could do it)

Modern diesels dont have this problem because of the fuel priming pump.
