Clutch Problem and Warranty Question

Featured Replies

Hi Fellow Octy owners.

I have had my Octy (vRS 2.0 TSFI 2006) for about 5 months now and it has an annoying clutch problem. Ever since I bought the car 2nd hand from Skoda dealer I have had this problem where the clutch pedal sometimes gets stuck on it's way back up. Sometimes I have to stick my foot under the pedal to bring it back to the top. There is also a constant tapping noise when stationary with the clutch depressed.

The car went in after a couple of months of ownership and they diagnosed the problem as the flywheel and replaced this under warranty. It has been in again this week and they have bled the hydraulic fluid claiming this had sorted the problem. Well I'm posting on here so obviously it hasn't worked.

Has anybody had a similar problem and managed to resolve it?

Also as I still have the Skoda warranty can I go to another dealer or should I stick with the current one which has failed to solve the problem?

Hope somebody can help!

I haven't had this problem on my Octavia but I had exactly the same thing on a Volvo I used to have and is was defective slave cylinder seals (happened twice - second time I fixed it myself). You need a new master or slave clutch cylinder - take it back.

Bob.

BTW I would try a different dealer - it's obvious (to me anyway) what the problem is, and I'm surprised they didn't know.

The tapping noise could most likely be sound from the clutch travelling up the pipework to the pedal. The next thing I would look to are the clutch pedal itself. i once had this problem on an old Ford Escort and it turned out to be the self adjusting mechanism sticking. I don't think the Octavia pedal will have this system so the next thing to look at is the master cylinder to see if it is sticking. Sounds more mechanical than an hydraulic problem. You didn't say if the clutch was releasing when the pedal was sticking.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I might go with the slave cylinder suggestion to the current dealer and see what they say.

The clutch operates as normal, it releases as normal and drives as normal but the clutch pedal just sticks.

On one occasion the pedal got stuck right down and i had about 5mm of movement which involved clutch depressed, through biting point to clutch engaged. Was an interesting few minutes.

Have you got any noise, like a humming when you pull away in first, or reverse? Mine was humming for a while, and I was told by Kings Heath Skoda it was my driving style. I got it checked out a few weeks ago by Redditch Skoda, and they found a damaged seal in the gearbox that had contaminated the clutch plates, so they fitted a new kit. That cured that but they still have the car for something they've done while dropping the box out. :'(

Just a suggestion on top of everyone elses of course.

Bit of an update.

I took the car to a different dealer (Rainworth) who seem much more professional than Hayselden. They have now had 2 attempts at the job and I am still getting the same problem.

So far i've had :

- DMF

- Slave Cylinder

- Slave Cylinder again

- Clutch

- Master Cylinder

And each time I get the car back I head for my lucky roundabout and go from 3rd to 4th as I exit and the clutch sticks halfway.

They are phoning me back Tuesday when the master technician is in again to decide what to do next.

I might start reviewing Fabias soon as i've driven every trim level and engine size in the last 4 months.

Further Update incase anybody else gets this problem.

Problem turned out to be a sticking clutch when I turned right. The clutch pedal would not return but the car would drive normally. Anyhow after months of trying diferent things I have ended up with a new engine!! This was after they tried a new gearbox!!

Basically there was movement in the crank which had sent the thrust washers through the oil pump and generally the inside of the engine was pretty messed up. All this only presented with the sticking clutch.

Happy now as I have a new clutch, gearbox and engine! Yay for reliable Skodas!! :giggle:

Wow - that is a new one on me! At least you can look forward to a 100,000 miles of motoring in your 'new' car!
