The Maxidot bonged up the other day that a service was due in "500 miles or 99 days". The car currently has 8.8K miles on the clock and was registered January 2009. I checked with the supplying dealer and they told me that all cars supplied by them to private/retail customers are routinely set to fixed (yearly) servicing. This is despite the cars data sticker indicating it was set to variable servicing at the factory.

They are quoting £100 for the first service (to be done at 1 year / 10K miles). I've emailed a few other dealers and so far have been quoted between £90 - £115 (inc VAT) for the first service. One dealer replied to my Email that Yeti's were on longlife servicing and the first service would not be required for up to 2 years or 20K miles. They quoted £228.56 (inc VAT) for the first variable service.

The car is used in a mainly urban enviroment and I think I'm happier having it looked at yearly (especially if the cost of the yearly services is less than half that of longlife servicing).

I think I'll ask my local dealer if they will match the cheapest 10K service quote and stay local.

I think you need to be asking your dealer why they changed the service interval, after it's set up at the factory. They could be doing this to make money by shortening the service times.

They told me it is their standard practice to reset all new cars sold to retail/private customers to fixed service intervals. The service book says next service due in 10k miles or 1 year and they've also stuck a sticker inside the drivers door stating the same. In all fairness I'm not too concerned though, as I'm not keen on not having the car looked at by a mechanic for up to 2 years. The servicing costs also seem similar (90 per year vs 230 every 2 years).

Is this common practice amongst other dealers?

If you do 'low' miles T & D is a better regime; 'Variable' is designed for high milers with longer journeys?

Longlife oil for both though - it's a better spec!

My TDI140 was left by the dealer on variable, but I've just had it serviced at 10k anyway. Interestingly my dealer has been taken over so rang the new owners for a price, service was busy so I left my number with the sales guy who answered the phone but no call back came. Therefore took it to the other local dealer; probably paid over the odds but they did clean it inside and out :)

My dealer obviously did not reset. I have just passed 15,000 miles and the service indicator is still showing a few thousand miles to go.

However, since it is almost a year since delivery, I have booked it in for its first service tomorrow. I have been quoted £135 including materials and VAT.

It was actually £125 and I got a .Roomster for the day! Service indicator not showing a figure now though.

We got a "reminder" from the dealers but the data sticker in the boot shows it as variable servicing, and the Maxidot reading confirmed the service is not due for another 4000 miles (which would be about 19,000 miles total) or 300 days (which would be 2 years total).

The calculations are actually done in kilometers,as the VAG is european therefore metric, and the service is due every 15,000 km which at 1.6 km to a mile equates to 9400 miles so that is why your servicing won't be done on the 10,000 mile mark.

My understanding is that all UK 1.2 TSi's are set to fixed servicing by the factory.

My wife's 1.2 TSi Fabia was delivered from the factory in that state.

Maybe it's different with the Fabia, but this doesn't appear to be the case with the 105 BHP 1.2 in the Yeti. The data label in the service book clearly states QG1 - i.e. variable servicing. Mine was actually reset to "fixed" by the supplying dealer.

I do seem to recall my old Roomster was set to fixed from the factory though.

So if your car is set by the dealer for fixed term servicing can you change it or insist it is changed to variable term?

My dealer told me once the car has been serviced it could be set to either fixed or variable. The car is used in a mainly urban environment, so I've decided to stick with fixed (yearly / 15K KM) servicing.
