Anyone done the "auto-boot" mod?

Featured Replies

Got all the bits together to do this:

Anyone had this done a while? Any issues?

I was also wondering if I might need two full size springs to lift the hatch?

Hi,

This came up a couple of months ago. I think the outcome was that the greater weight of the Hatch meant that just using springs didn't produce a lasting solution. The alternative would be to use stronger gass struts. My old BMW Hatch had these as standard and it was nice to just press a button and get the back open. You can buy adjustable gass struts or get them made at what ever value you need. Do a search and you will see a few links I put up. The trouble is I have no idea what values would be required.

This project is on the back burner at the moment due to work and I also need to sort out sound deadening first.

I spoke to a gas strut company and he said that to get the power lower down and with a spring to boost the tailgate that it would make shutting it a lot harder due to the strength of the strut to compensate for the weight of the hatch.

My springs worked for an hour or two and then lost some of their power due to their over compression.

Was great at the time.

I have it done on my 2010 octy estate.

Have had the springs on now for 3 months and no problems yet.

Hatch opens everytime by remote.

It is a tiny bit harder to close since the springs needs to be compressed while closing, but that is a very small draw back for this awesome feature.

And heres a little video of the "party trick"
