Vrs limited edition water pump impeller platic or metal?

Featured Replies

Hiya,

My vrs limited edition is having some work done at Skoda as we speak.

They are going to be changing the cam belt and I have been warned that some vw 1.9t engines had a plastic impeller on the water pump that breaks up easily with age but some some later cars they started to use metal impellers

Which ha mine got plastic or metal impeller.

If mine has a plastic impeller I'll get them to change it with the cam belt to ave on the labour but if it's metal it can stay.

Thanks for your help

Dave

I have yet to see one that is metal from factory.

In which case do Skoda acually sell a metal impelled water pump. Only going to be able to ask them to fit Skoda genuine parts?

VAG do not use metal water pumps on any of the 1.9tdi or 1.8turbo petrol engines.

Metal Impellors are pattern parts.

VAG apparently upgraded the impellor to a stronger grade of plastic now.

When I had my belt done I enquired about changing the waterpump. Was told that though it was "common" for them to fail on 1.8Ts, on 1.9TDIs they hadn't seen more than a handful.

On that basis, I dropped the idea of changing the pump.

On diesels, they have less work to do and are subject to less thermal stress IMO (diesels rev far lower and retain (waste) far less heat). If I was tuning the guts off it or doing track days and/or lots of drag racing it would be another matter.

I also heard this which is why I just got a standard VAG plasticky one when I had the engine rebuilt earlier this year. :)

I still as yet have not seen a VAG metal one (for the 1.8T or 1.9 TDi) and have been changing them all week..lol We get a high stock turnover with new product all the time.
